The role is also responsible for managing the Approved Public Record Office Storage Supplier (APROSS) Program, which requires overseeing the appointment and reappointment of sites across Victoria. The Manager is required to consult with senior stakeholders, have sound understanding of building codes, fire safety codes, pest management best practice, and related legislation, in addition to PROVs own recordkeeping and collection management standards.

Class B PODs can only hold temporary public recordsWhile this role works closely with Class A PODS, a range of historical societies, museums and genealogical organisations around regional and metropolitan Victoria have been appointed to hold temporary public records in their collections. This role works with these organisations to support them in caring for public records, providing access to them and authorising the transfer of public records into their collections. This Victoria-wide network is growing steadily.

Public Record Office Victoria is the archives of the Victorian State Government holding over 100km of documentation, maps and audiovisual material relating to the establishment of Melbourne and wider Victoria. 180 volunteers from all walks of life, undertake work (a staggering 35,000 hours annually) on under-utilised or difficult-to-use areas of the Collection, conserving records and adding search metadata to allow researchers to more easily discover and use important records relating to Victoria’s history. In November 2014, Public Record Office Victoria’s volunteer program was the recipient of a Melbourne Award – the highest accolade bestowed by the City of Melbourne. This award recognised PROV’s volunteer program under the category contribution to community by a corporation, specifically the program’s permanent contribution to current and future researchers as well as enhancing Melbourne’s reputation as a centre for research.
