Led a strategic review of HWU’s internal and external operations, marketing and communications in relation to sport to develop a strategic direction to facilitate growth, maintain market share and support diversification. Responsible for establishing the University’s global sport approach in order to increase HWU’s international profile, helping to maintain and enhance a competitive position within the higher educational marketplace. Leading on the development of a marketing and communication plan in order to position Heriot Watt as a credible provider of sport education.

Led the delivery of global and civic engagement initiatives, devising and embedding institutional strategies for Global Engagement and Civic Mission, which increased profile, maintaining and enhancing a competitive position within the higher educational marketplace. Managed and grew home and international student recruitment by devising and implementing enhanced Open Days, Applicant Days and Induction, strengthening partnerships with agents, schools and FE providers and expanding the Widening Access programme. Enhanced the academic environment for students and staff by implementing new strategies to allow academics to flourish and to meet individual, student and University expectations. Championed process and procedure improvements that embedded student and staff wellbeing, social responsibility and sustainability into the governance and operations of the University, to deliver a value-led working environment that protected students and staff.

Led the development and implementation of the School of Sport and Health Sciences strategic plan and the underpinning management and academic structures, operations and policies required to integrate the School of Sport and the School of Health Sciences.

Defined the strategic direction of the International Department, collaborating with academic schools, international partners and government agencies. Led the International team in the expert delivery of tasks, sharing knowledge and best practice to enhance understanding and action related to internationalisation across the University and beyond. Championed the integration of internationalisation into the curriculum. Led the University’s initiative to establish an off-shore campus in Malaysia. Enhanced the University’s TNE offering, expanding existing partnerships and identifying new partnerships. Member of the governing body: University Court.

Oversight of the development of a distinct external profile for sport, bringing together sport education, athlete performance and staff, student and community participation. Led the strategic development and overall direction of educational provision and research to underpin the University’s designation as Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence. Directed portfolio development and performance to position the University as a national and global leader in sport education. Increased student recruitment and retention across all programmes through innovation curriculum development. Oversaw merger of the School of Sport with the School of Health to create the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport. Member of the governing body: University Court.
