Hanging out with the elementary school teachers in the Mountain Province village of the Philippines where I lived, a teacher asked me if they could practice doing a perm on my naturally curly hair. I was completely puzzled by this and asked them why they thought I needed a perm. Their answer - my perm was so fantastic that it would be a perfect challenge to re-create it. They were astounded to learn that my hair grew out of my head with curls. I love this memory - it always makes me smile, and I daily apply its lessons.1. Things are not always as they appear. Dig deep. Work hard to understand. Ask a lot of questions.2. Even the most educated among us have much to learn. Each person we meet is a teacher.3. Surrounding ourselves only with the familiar limits our imagination. Shake things up periodically. Force yourself to step out of your comfort zone. I approach my career and my daily job inspired to open my mind to new ideas and experiences. I also encourage my teammates, especially those I manage, to do the same. To take chances. To learn from mistakes and failures. To see projects, people and ideas from a fresh perspective. I never would have gone to the Philippines if I was afraid of taking chances. And, if I hadn't gone to the Philippines, I am not sure I would ever laugh at the idea that the hair on my head naturally produces curls.
