About Leigh Goldie, M.Ed.

What CAN you do? Growing up while managing epilepsy due to a traumatic brain injury when I was 8 years old, I never had an answer for that. I was always told what I couldn't do, as I could possibly have a seizure. Any place I wanted to go, I had the chance of having a seizure in public which would cause embarrassment and isolation. It also affected me academically and professionally. Luckily, when I was 22, I was able to have surgery and have been seizure free ever since. I am now an Epilepsy Survivor. People with epilepsy don't talk about this chronic disease because of the ongoing stigma that accompanies seizures. When people lose control of their bodies, everyone gets nervous as to how to handle it. Our goal is to teach them.Empowering Epilepsy was started by a group of people in Cleveland, Ohio who understand epilepsy first hand. We are working together to show people living with epilepsy what they can do. Whether it be:- meeting other people who understand what they are going through- joining our age based monthly virtual support groups- learning more about their specific diagnosis and treatment plan through our Patient Education Program, with content authored by some of the top epilepsy specialists in the country- holding Purple Day® and Epilepsy Awareness Parties to create fun and engaging experiences- running with our Empowering Epilepsy Team in the Cleveland Marathon- accomplishing a 5K with the Gunselman's Tavern Leprechaun Chase- participating in Empowering Epilepsy Yoga- holding our Empowering Epilepsy: Brain Surgery Conference, Empower Your Life Conference, SUDEP Action Day Talk and NonEpileptic Seizure Conference- teaching parents and teachers how to help their students with epilepsy succeed in school- creating art in our Empowering Through the Arts - Art Therapy Program Empowering Epilepsy provides free or low cost services and support to empower their lives. If you know someone who experiences epilepsy and seizures, please tell them about Empowering Epilepsy. Creating relationships with people who understand your experiences is key to empowering a person's life. Help us show people living with seizures what they can do while living with this debilitating, chronic disease.
