My role as adjunct faculty for the Department of Health Informatics and Information Management at the University of Mississippi Medical Center afforded me an amazing opportunity to remain connected as a teacher and mentor to up and coming health informaticists. I was responsible for teaching a master’s degree course in revenue cycle and finance and an undergraduate course in human resources. For several years, I also served as a member of the faculty advisory board offering guidance on skills and competencies sought after by employers.I have had the opportunity to revamp the curriculum for both the revenue cycle and the human resources courses to modernize concepts and instruct students on the evolving role of health information management professionals in hospitals and physician practices. In revenue cycle, we have focused on the shift from fee-for-service to a value-based care environment, exploring all of the impacts that this has on hospital and physician practice strategy, management, and reimbursement. In human resources, I have created a curriculum to match modern human resources practices and challenge undergraduate students to learn the basics of personnel management and team member engagement. My goal is to help equip our graduates with strong skills in these disciplines and aid the healthcare work force by creating more qualified graduates every year.
