Profile bio

About Leilani Ruffini

I have completed my Bachelor of Science in Biology and Bachelor of Education in Secondary Education at the University of British Columbia and have worked at the Centre for Blood Research in the Overall Lab. From the start of my educational career, I have had a passion for laboratory work. As an enthusiastic life science major, I participated in many laboratory classes and was also employed as a laboratory assistant. This has given me a wide range of skills that include: recording and analyzing data, interpreting results, preparing experimental material, and performing experiments. However, after having the opportunity to volunteer as a summer camp counsellor and as a teaching assistant, I realized I wanted to help others through educating. This is where I developed my passion in science education. Educators play a crucial role in learners becoming responsible and informed citizens. As an educator, my job is not to only teach the curriculum, but to also provide opportunities for learners to make mistakes, learn from them, and apply them in real world contexts. I want learners to use the information and opportunities given to them so that they can make more informed decisions that will not only benefit them, but their communities. During my practicum and as a teaching on call, I noticed how important technology is in education. It is used to engage, communicate, and continue education. With the pandemic, it has changed the foundations of how educators educate learners. Technology has become an increasingly vital platform in educating. Both learners and educators were required to adapt to the changing education infrastructure and learn from various online platforms during this time. This is where my interest in educational technology developed and lead me to pursue a Masters in Educational Technology. By gaining more experience in various e-Learning platforms and understanding the underlying foundations in methodology, design, and pedagogy, I can create curriculum catered towards future learners.

Listed skills include Laboratory Skills, Clerical Skills, Time Management, Teamwork, and 4 others.
