Leila J. Noël, partner with Cappello & Noël, LLP in Santa Barbara, represents plaintiffs in lender liability, complex business litigation and catastrophic personal injury litigation and in banking and financial transactions. Noël has co-tried most of the firm’s largest cases with law partner A. Barry Cappello, having obtained jury verdicts and settlements in excess of $200 million on behalf of her clients. She was named one of the "Top 75 Women Litigators" for 2011 by the Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journals and as one of the "Top 100 Women Lawyers" for 2013 by the same publications..Noël represented the parents of a 4 ½ year old boy who drowned at an athletic club due to negligence and willful misconduct by the club and its employees. The $16.2 million jury verdict was one of the largest for a child wrongful death case in California. Noël also represents plaintiffs in class action cases. She represented hundreds of victims of cancer and their families against Boeing for toxic air contamination resulting in a multi-million-dollar settlement.In 2011, Noël was co-lead counsel in a lending discrimination class action against Wells Fargo Bank under the Unruh Civil Rights Act. The suit brought to light the bank's discriminatory lending practices against borrowers in minority neighborhoods in Los Angeles, resulting in higher loan costs for those borrowers. The jury found that the bank violated the Act. With attorneys' fees, costs and interest, the total judgment against Wells Fargo Bank is $9.8 million.In 2012, Noël was co-lead counsel to parents of a teenager killed in a wrong-way-driver accident. She argued that the inappropriate actions of a Santa Barbara County Sheriff led to the death of the teenager, and she defeated the defendants’ claim of statutory pursuit immunity.Santa Barbara County and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department settled with the teen's parents for $4.8 million.
