In 2002, I founded a community service initiative called Bringing Relief Every Day (BRED). As an undergraduate at Yale University, every night I witnessed leftover food being thrown away. I would then leave the dining hall and walk home, passing homeless people that lined thestreets of New Haven. I decided to bridge that gap by founding B.R.E.D., an organization in which students would pick up the leftover food from dining halls and distribute it to the needy. At its core, the organization has the dual goals of serving the homeless and hungry, and encouraging students to get truly involved in the community. Over a decade later the organization lives on, and today B.R.E.D. collects roughly 50 pounds of food from each and every one of Yale’s dining halls to distribute to those in need.
