Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Clemson, South Carolina

A deacon in the Catholic Church serves the Bishop and is assigned to help the pastor at a local Catholic Church, I have been assigned to Saint Andrew Catholic Church in Clemson, SC. I also with Prison Ministry on the local and state level, baptismal preparation, marriage preparation, and adult formation in the parish. My personal goal is to help the priests and youth minister in any way possible to serve God’s people in and out of Church.

I consider attending trade events critical to staying up-to-date as an educator, but as an educator there is typically only enough funding to attend one conference each year. The solution was to become a presenter at these events. My first year out of college in 1979 I made one presentation to a conference for graphic arts teachers, my busiest year was the 2013–2014 academic year I made 34 presentations at 22 industry events. To date, I have made over 550 presentations to educational and industry participants.I trade what I know for travel and registration expenses. The goal is to validate what I am teaching my student and find out what new information they need to have to be successful in the industry. The presentations are not your typical academic 10–15 minute presentation done at an academic conference—these range from a typical hour presentation to a 3-day workshop and the focus is on technical or practical concepts that can be brought back to a company and implemented if the participant has the motivation. The training is structured in keeping with Clemson’s Department of Graphic Communications Original Mission Statement: To develop dedicated, practical problem solving people for the printing, publishing, imaging, packaging and allied industries. I have worked with five different law firms on patent lawsuits and false advertising claims for the print industry. The lawsuits have dealt with equipment and software. I have submitted expert reports for all of the disputes and been deposed and took the stand in one dispute.

I have taught courses in flexography, lithography, digital printing, inks and substrates as well as the department’s management class dealing with estimating, planning, equipment purchasing, cost analysis, and plant layout. I retired in May 2018 and now only teach one class in sales.
