I have been a teacher for 40 years, teaching in a high school, 2-year community college and a 4-year university—I retired from Clemson University in May of 2018. My official title for Clemson is now Professor Emeritus. As of February 9, 2019, I have changed careers and I am now an ordained deacon in the Catholic Church. That being said I hope to use some of the gifts God has developed in me, during my 40 years of teaching, to serve the Church and people of South Carolina. I felt I was called by God to be a deacon, he has been so good to me and my family.I spent five years preparing for this career change, working on a Master‘s Degree in Theology with 15 other men from across South Carolina. This degree program took everything I thought I knew about my faith and tore it to pieces and then rebuilt the knowledge based on sound theology and historical support. In addition to serving the Catholic Church, I am have been involved with prison ministry for the past 9 years and recently joined Kairos Prison Ministry. This ecumenical outreach to the men in the SC Department of Corrections is inspiring. There are so many volunteers involved in this ministry to bring Christ into the correctional facilities. There are men from every walk of life, but with a passion to bring people closer to God.I am still involved with some elements of the print and mailing industry and teaching a part-time class in sales for Clemson. I am working on a project with the USPS to help students across the country become more aware of the value of mail and how to properly prepare an integrated marketing campaign to serve the needs of the customer. I also believe I can bring a better understanding of how to effectively reduce mailing costs to parishes around the state, using those gifts God has developed within me over the last few years of teaching at Clemson.My family continues to grow, we added another granddaughter in December 2018. Being a grandparent is life changing as well.

Conference/Trade Show Speaker/Panelist/Training FacilitatorFreelance Presenter 1979 - PresentI consider attending trade events critical to staying up-to-date as an educator, but as an educator there is typically only enough funding to attend one conference each year. The solution was to become a presenter at these events. My first year out of college in 1979 I made one presentation to a conference for graphic arts teachers, my busiest year was the 2013–2014 academic year I made 34 presentations at 22 industry events. To date, I have made over 550 presentations to educational and industry participants.I trade what I know for travel and registration expenses. The goal is to validate what I am teaching my student and find out what new information they need to have to be successful in the industry. The presentations are not your typical academic 10–15 minute presentation done at an academic conference—these range from a typical hour presentation to a 3-day workshop and the focus is on technical or practical concepts that can be brought back to a company and implemented if the participant has the motivation. The training is structured in keeping with Clemson’s Department of Graphic Communications Original Mission Statement: To develop dedicated, practical problem solving people for the printing, publishing, imaging, packaging and allied industries.
