As a PhD Candidate in the Department of Biochemistry, SLS, I tried to identify apoptotic proteins or partners in apoptosis-like or apoptotic events in the life cycle of Leishmania donovani, a protozoan causing Visceral Leishmaniasis. I am using the reverse genetics approach, CRISPR-Cas9 gene edition, and quantitative PCR to validate our screened candidate proteins experimentally.

The EMBO SEG project aims to validate our computational revelationof mammalian apoptotic orthologs in Leishmania species that could be a potential therapeutic target. In the lab of Prof Yvon Sterkers at the CHU de Montpellier, we developed a proof-of-concept and generated knock-out populations for one of the computationally found proteins effectively. We validated the apoptotic induction in Leishmania using the TUNEL assay. In addition, we optimize qRT-PCR to create an expression profile for our targeted genes.
