“LEISURE” -- beyond the “work-leisure” dichotomy -- is inclusive, eclectic, pluralistic, behaviour in its applications, activities, “quality of life”, “state of mind”, and volunteering/civic society.the population at large might assume that “leisure” and “recreation” are interchangeable, but since recreation (especially in the US) tends to be in the physical domain, scholars of any ilk would assert that “leisure includes recreation”, but “recreation is NOT leisure”!philosophically, leisure is “independent of culture, religion, or politics”.however, an anthropologist would contend that there is a “cultural, religious, or political impact/influence on leisure”.practitioners of leisure recognise “time” and “money” as “barriers to leisure”, but an anthropologist might avow that “gender” too be considered a “barrier” in the way leisure is allowed to exist!anyone who is au fait with both cultures on either side of the atlantic, would observe that for us-americans, leisure is a “doing activity” -- which really is “recreation” -- while for europeans, leisure is very much a “state of mind”!if we can consent to this cohesive approach to/for leisure, perhaps, leisure (as a weltanschauung) can be the catalyst to diminish culture, religion, or politics as barriers.a maxim to live by could be, “work for a living, play for a life: leisure as social capital and quality of life”!Specialties: experienced independent “leisure organiser/facilitator/programmer/counsellor/manager” professional.
