Growing up in conservation areas (mainly national parks) around Kenya gave me a deep understanding of environmental, wildlife, and biodiversity conservation in the country. I was able to witness firsthand the importance of conservation efforts and the important role that communities play in safeguarding nature. I was exposed to the complexities and challenges of conservation from a young age, and this shaped my passion for the field.I co-founded NaPO (Nature and People as One) because I believe that a more inclusive approach to area-based conservation is crucial in protecting and preserving biodiversity and wildlife. I understand that conservation efforts are not just about protecting wildlife and their habitats but also about ensuring the well-being of the people living in and around these areas. Through NaPO, I am working to partner with local and indigenous communities in conservation efforts, creating a more sustainable and equitable approach to conservation.I am also currently pursuing a Master's degree in Climate Change Adaptation with a focus on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) at the University of Nairobi. My thesis is focused on ‘the opportunities and challenges of OECMs (Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures) to complement existing Protected Areas and enhance effective and equitable biodiversity conservation in Kenya. OECMs are NbS and are a key strategy for addressing the impacts of climate change on natural ecosystems and communities. My Bachelor's degree in Business means I understand the importance of enterprises in catalyzing conservation and land restoration. I believe that conservation and economic development can be mutually beneficial and that conservation has the potential to improve the livelihoods of local communities. Through NaPO, I am actively exploring pathways through which nature can play a critical role in improving the livelihoods of local communities. I am keen on enhancing fair and effective area-based conservation, conservation-based enterprise development, and the use of conservation-related financial instruments as a means of supporting conservation.In summary, my passion for conservation and my commitment to an inclusive and effective approach to conservation as well as my background, education, and experience position me well to make meaningful contributions to conservation efforts in both at local and global level.
