The Mechanical Systems section of the Operational Support group provides engineering support for aircraft pneumatic and hydraulic systems, landing gear, flight controls and aircraft interiors.

Overall design lead for the upgrade of the QANTAS Defence Services (QDS) military engine test cell at the Mascot Jet Base. Provided detailed technical instruction for the installation, calibration and commissioning of a high-speed 40-parameter data acquisition system for testing the Rolls-Royce Adour military turbofan. Wrote all acquisition programs using the LabVIEW software suite.

Provided engineering support to a workshop of 80 tradesmen and technicians involved in the overhaul and testing of aircraft components. Responsibility for upgrading and maintaining QANTAS workshop equipment and tooling to CASA and FAA accreditation standards. Worked closely with Calibration Laboratory to improve calibration procedures and to reduce calibration turnaround times. Upgraded QANTAS’s component test facilities by installing numerous additional LabVIEW-based test rigs.

Investigated and proposed remedial action for reliability problems on Boeing 767/CF6-80 bleed air system. The recommendations emerging from this project delivered savings, in the form of reduced B767 mechanical failures and rejected take-offs, of $1 million within six months.

Member of project team conducting airworthiness audit of Virgin Blue’s maintenance operations prior to cut-over to new maintenance scheduling system.
