About Lena Wright
Much of my career has revolved around environmental and applied science. I started at UNLV as a Freshman working in a soil-water-plant interact laboratory under Dr. Dale Devitt. I learned a great deal about working on and troubleshooting instrumentation. Without huge research budgets one figures out how to make the most of the money available and get creative to make it work. While working on my Masters with him and running the day to day operation of the lab, one learns to prioritize and organize to juggle all the projects without dropping one. Nothing is ever perfect and there will always be more questions to ask, otherwise you are not thinking big enough. Working as a contractor has shown me there is more to science than pure research for knowledge but to never lose that drive to learn and explore. Otherwise I could become stagnant and complacent. In the future, I hope to continue learning and find a career than not only pays the bills but satisfies my love of learning and forces me to be creative in my approach to problem solving.

75% of my time is devoted to maintenance and calibration of air, soil and water sampling/monitoring equipment. This generally involves basic calibration but also troubleshooting and repair as necessary. Field work comprises about 15% of my time. Field work can include air sample collection using tedlar bags or onto a filter, soil or water collection and analysis of samples in the field. The remainder of my time is spent on training and officework.

As a graduate assistant in the Science and Engineering Building (SEB) my main objective is to collect research from professors in the building and create powerpoint based videos to highlight the outstanding research being done by professors at UNLV. These videos are displayed in the SEB Lobby where students, faculty and visitors can see the work that is being done by professors in SEB. This opportunity has given me a taste of the incredible research being done by professors that have research interests outside of my expertise. It has also taught me a little about various scientific fields, time management, and how to present different types of information.
