For the first decade of my career, I managed products and inventory in distribution - which is like trying to put together a evening city skyline puzzle while an off-camera monkey adds in farm landscape pieces from another box. It’s an art, really. The art of having products for every season, store opening, and category reset, all while reducing inventory. The art of building new brands while pushing old faithfuls to keep growing and looking for new ways to approach the ever-evolving market. The art of maximizing margin, while not losing business. The art of strategically partnering with brands to add value to product categories, while handling a flood of new product requests. The puzzle is never complete. But, with the edges neatly put together and a leftover pile of blue sky pieces, I learned that many things can matter all at once: finances and relationships, long-term strategy and urgent fires. The fun is in finding the best way to make all of them work cohesively.I am not particularly clever. I often get annoyed by ads. And I don’t like pushy people. I didn’t think marketing was for me. Then, Seth Godin changed my perspective: “Marketing is the generous act of helping someone solve a problem. Their problem.” Solving problems is something I do well.And design. I love good design.Now, I spend my days learning as much as I can about the people I serve. I look for challenges and ask why a lot. I pull from my experience to ensure balance. I position products as solutions to resonate with those who need them most, and create experiences that make the retail space function a little better every day.
