Associate EditorHoward University-Jne Mar 2005 - Aug 2024Washington, Dc, UsWorked collaboratively with the Editor-in-Chief to produce 4 timely issues per year of The Journal of Negro Education (JNE), in which I copyedit manuscripts, research historical data, and verify facts to uphold the mission of The Journal, which is threefold: “first, to stimulate the collection and facilitate the dissemination of facts about the education of Black people; second, to present discussions involving critical appraisals of the proposals and practices relating to the education of Black people; and third, to stimulate and sponsor investigations of issues incident to the education of Black people.”Maintain the online manuscript review through ScholarOne, which has a database of more than 500 peer reviewers.First as the Consultant, part time, and then the Associate Editor, full-time, I updated editorial procedures and policies: I manage a total electronic editorial production and contact with authors via email and facsimile saving both time and money. I streamlined the efficiency and effectiveness of production of journal issues by the three-prong system of electronic mail, hard copy, and computer disk to the typesetter. I have cut the peer reviewer editorial delay by 95%. I have attended meetings and presented reports to uphold the legacy of the founder, Charles H. Thompson. -
Managing EditorHoward University Press Apr 2003 - Oct 2004Worked with the Director of the Press as managing editor ( temporary position) in which I read, reviewed, accepted or rejected incoming manuscript book proposals in the areas of political science, history, biography, and education. In addition, I edited and proofread special projects and provided timely written reports to the Director, generated all written correspondence to potential authors and under the signature of the Director, maintained the active proposal database, and performed other duties as assigned.I was most instrumental in the completion of the 100+ titles classic and choice editions that had been reformatted using an on-demand digital service provider. I performed editorial quality assurance checks of all titles for accuracy and completeness. Since many were in paperback that had previously been formatted in cloth, I also made all notifications to BowkerLink and the Library of Congress (CIP) to have new formats, copyrights, and price changes updated. Most of these changes were performed electronically using online service publisher databases. In addition, I reviewed electronic copyedited manuscript pages to printed copy of A Right Worthy Grand Mission: Maggie Lena Walker and the Quest for Black Economic Empowerment. Due to the death of the author, Gertrude Marlowe, many source notes and photographs were incomplete. I was most effective assisting with photograph and caption selection and completing references for several chapters through the use of my extensive library research and Internet search engine skills. This publication was recently named a finalist by Foreword magazine as an outstanding Book of the Year for 2003 in the biography category. I also worked on the editorial first stages of LaSalle D. Leffall’s memoir, “No Boundaries: A Cancer Surgeon’s Odyssey, in which my services are acknowledged. Dr. Leffall is a Howard alumnus and esteemed professor emeritus in the School of Medicine.
