Restructuring and corporate acquisition at SuperPower's parent company Intermagnetics General Corp. led to this position which was a "detour" from my main interests in electric power systems. Managed the development of specialized patient monitors compatible for use in Magnetic Resonance Imaging suites. Led cross functional teams thru two major new product development cycles of MRI compatible patient monitors. Functional manager of Electrical Development group for 3 years during this period.

Managed research team exploring new product employing high temperature superconductors to address emerging market for fault current over-duty problems in electric power industry. SuperPower was a subsidiary of Intermagnetics General Corp. during this period.• Maintain relationship with DOE, EPRI, government labs and utility program sponsors who were financially supporting product research. • Manage direct reports and program objectives - budgets, technical milestones and IP portfolio. Accomplishments:• Led development team to achieve 2 out of 9 ranking among DOE’s Superconductivity Partnership Initiative projects to secure follow-on program funding. • Established Technical Advisory Board of utility end users to guide the specification of product performance requirements.• Established an agreement with major utility to be host user for first prototype device and to provide project in-kind cost share.

Functional Engineering Manager in High Voltage Division. Became part of Siemens thru acquisition of Westinghouse Electric Corp. • Develop and design Flexible AC Transmissions Systems (FACTS) using high power electronics voltage-sourced converters for power grid voltage regulation and power flow control. • Played a major role in maintaining the relationship with external stakeholders. • Manage direct reports and coordinate deployment of engineering resources to support division needs for projects (up to $15M value), fleet maintenance, engineering upgrades, technical marketing and manufacturing. Accomplishments:• Facilitated transition of products from the R&D lab into production by leading efforts to develop vendor qualification processes, inspection procedures, assembly drawings, standardized test procedures and project quality assurance plans consistent with ISO 9000. Resulted in 20% reduction in product assembly time. • Improved customer satisfaction with product by leading a team focused on resolving issues that were causing excessive outages and downtime. Raised the average fleet availability from 90% to 98% to meet industry standards.

Managed the development of first-of-kind power electronics demonstration projects for utility applications.
