During this time, I am:Advancing my GIS skills through dedicated coursework.Finalising academic publications related to conservation science.Developing data science solutions for conservation projects, including a birdwatching-related application.Volunteering my expertise towards several conservation initiatives, including action plans and task force projects focused on threatened species management and human-wildlife conflict.This sabbatical allows me to deepen my skills and contribute meaningfully to projects of interest, as I prepare for future full-time opportunities in data science and conservation.

Working remotely for The University of Queensland as a Research Assistant offers me the invaluable chance to work from my home country, Saint Lucia, after several years abroad. My role involves utilising my specialised knowledge of South-East Queensland bird species to support biodiversity conservation efforts. This position not only plays to my strengths in biodiversity monitoring but also gives me the latitude to further develop my skills and dedicate time to significant side projects, such as my independent research on Human-Wildlife Conflict. Balancing these responsibilities, I am able to contribute meaningfully to conservation initiatives across continents while engaging with and contributing to the natural heritage of my homeland.

As the Data Curation Analyst, my role is pivotal in enhancing data management and curation within ecological research. My key contributions include:Optimising data pipeline processes for efficient data onboarding and improving the accessibility of diverse ecological datasets.Developing data curation guidelines to ensure consistency and quality in data handling and usage.Crafting Python scripts to automate data validation, thus bolstering dataset reliability for research applications.Creating Jupyter Notebook tutorials to educate and assist researchers in data visualisation and analysis techniques, emphasising the practical applications of our datasets.Generating use cases to illustrate the potential of our datasets, guiding researchers on data access, analysis, and the types of research questions that can be explored with our resources.My role demands a balance of technical acumen in data science with a commitment to making ecological data more tangible and usable for researchers, driving forward the field of conservation.

In this role I contributed towards optimising computationally expensive R scripts used for niche ecological models. I identified the performance bottlenecks and converted these sections to C++ using the Rcpp and RcppArmadillo packages within R.

In this role, I planned and implemented a monitoring project to assess avian species richness using short-term passive acoustic monitoring at a nature reserve in Far North Queensland.

Coordinated Fauna & Flora International’s (FFI) projects on various threatened species in Saint Lucia withparticular focus on the Saint Lucia racer (Erythrolamprus ornatus), the Saint Lucia pit viper (Bothrops caribbaeus), and lansan (Protium attenuatum).Produced regular reports on the progress and implementation challenges of projects being coordinated.Facilitated inter-agency collaboration between FFI and the government of St. Lucia.Contributed engaging content to FFI’s website in the form of engaging andinformative articles.Conducted ecological surveys in Saint Lucia, Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis withparticular focus on birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invasive mammals.
