Who I am today has been defined and influenced significantly by my background and experiences having lived and worked in five continents. Growing up in countries and conditions that range from the sub third world through emerging markets to mature developed nations, provides me with a unique perspective and appreciation for life. My early childhood years were influenced by going to a school where kids could not afford shoes, and appreciating the daily challenges of poverty. I owned a bean farm while in University at the age of sixteen along with multiple unskilled jobs to pay my way through. These experiences have opened my eyes to the importance of education, hard work, persistence, humility and relationships. I am exceptionally passionate about transforming education, how we interact with our surroundings, clean water access and healthcare globally, from how we view it today to how it should be deployed in the future, given the technological trends. It's crucial to build and execute plans that will bring together NGOs, Businesses, Governments, local communities and educators that will fundamentally change the way we live and help close the gap for the billion people that do not have access and opportunities. I am an extremely curious "nerd" that’s equally comfortable discussing advanced technologies, IoT, and futuristic visions as I am with the latest trending topics on social media. I was the Mechanical / Electrical Project Manager of record - which entailed managing the Mechanical and Electrical consulting Engineers, working hand in hand with the Developers and Architects to design buildings to building standards and codes. As a design build firm, my responsibilities extended into RFP development, contract evaluation and in turn hiring and managing the mechanical and electrical contractors to build the homes through the construction cycle. My team was also involved in the after handover services and warranties of the homes. I was also responsible for the logistics associated with all the machinery on site and ensuring that we maximized its utilization - think about the all the machinery and vehicles to effectively build 10,000 homes in a 3 yr time frame.Great project that challenged the logistical ability of the team. At our peak production, we were handing over 35 completed homes to customers every day - and we had sites that ranged from the greenfield leveling through the various phases of construction with frames, walls, finishes all the way to occupied homes.As much as I enjoyed being a key member of this team, I loved living in Malaysia and all of its people with all the diverse cultures, the melting pot ... wow the food ;-) ... It was absolutely out of this world phenomenal!!! Alastair Muir ..... Thanks for dragging me half way across the world ;-) and teaching me a lot of things on both a professional and personal level that I utilize to this very day!!!

The true character of people and society reveals itself when they are at the bottom, and in a time of need. Forever grateful to Marek Milej for teaching me engineering in practice from determining roof truss sizes to calculating the right concrete mixes of sand, cement and gravel for specific strength requirements all the way through teaching me how to fix every piece of mechanical and electrical equipment (vehicles, cranes, generators, etc) we had on site. His education on using a theodolite was invaluable in my ability to survey and lay water pipes through a living breathing city. And oh before I forget thanks to the geologist Bible, Groundwater and Wells for teaching me the art of being the underground rain maker. Becoming a Jack of all Trades is a concept that can only be experienced in an environment deficient in resources and expertise. There was no better reward to months of geological surveys, exploration, borehole cleaning, working with hardly any tools in the hot sun, than watching the kids playing in the first yield out of a borehole that will serve the community for years to come.

Way before the internet, online banking, background checks, Google searches, linked in, or the six degrees of contact to verify who you could trust. Trust was established by looking someone in the eye and being able to tell the difference between a competitive trust worthy partner and one that would sell his mother down the street. I loved going through directories at commerce ministries, consulate chambers of commerce ... making first contact with our suppliers or customers ... negotiating ... closing the deal and winning. Winning is all about having the trust of your customer who knows he can count on you to deliver no matter what!!!Of course the middleware, not so fun stuff also had to be done. Paperwork, Letters of Credit, Bills of lading, receiving the goods at the port, watching our vessels being offloaded for 72 hrs straight by men tossing 110lb bags like they were horse shoes, for a days wage that could barely buy one decent meal. I always wondered why these men were not in the Olympics or doing greater things and over the years, I have come to learn that it came down to not having the opportunities or having lost them along the way. As a society, we should continually strive to provide opportunities to the less fortunate - no matter who they seem to be currently - none of us know what challenges they have faced in life. We are only as good as the least of us.
