Involved in the Global Yield Gap Atlas Project (www.yieldgap.org). In this project we develop an atlas that displays exploitable yield gaps, i.e. the difference between current average farm yields and potential yields. I was responsible for development of methods, data collection, simulations with crop growth models, and writing of scientific papers.

Involved in two international projects: MACSUR (www.macsur.eu) and AgMIP (www.agmip.org). I coordinated and worked on projects studying research questions related to scaling-issues in crop growth modelling.

Title: From field to globe: Upscaling of crop growth modellingPromotor: prof. dr. ir. H. van Keulen, dr. ir. M.K. van IttersumCo Promotor: dr.ir. P.A. Leffelaar , prof. dr. F.A. EwertCrop growth models are increasingly applied to calculate possible crop growth at the global scale; addressing questions related to global food demand issues such as “will the growing world population have enough to eat in the coming decades?” or “which regions will be most vulnerable to climate change?”. Crop growth models were originally developed for a single field, using location-specific weather and crop management data as input. Availability of sound data normally decreases at larger scales. Therefore, application of field-scale crop growth models at larger scales might give possible errors and raises upscaling issues. An example is the availability of weather data at the global scale. For large parts of the globe weather data are only available as monthly averages. We found that replacing daily by monthly weather gives only slightly different simulated yields, as long as the model is not too detailed and if it makes use of mainly linear relationships. We also concluded that the ability of a model that makes use of mainly linear relationships to reproduce observed yields, is comparable with a more detailed model. Next we showed that location-specific sowing dates can be replaced by one average sowing date per region, with only small effects on model outcomes. For climate impact studies it might be necessary to consider the fact that farmers may adapt sowing dates and cultivar use to changes in climatic conditions; we developed methodologies which make this possible. The thesis concludes with a discussion on a proposed structure of a global crop growth model, in which the obtained insights are applied. Results are published in high impact scientific journals and are presented on international conferences.
