About Michele Lent Hirsch

I'm a queer writer and editor who loves to help folks strengthen their craft, whether they're working on short-form memoir, a book proposal, or the art of editing itself. My first book, a blend of memoir and literary journalism, came out in 2018 from Beacon Press. It uses the lens of gender and health to shed light on our country's large-scale inequities. It's been featured in Longreads, Literary Hub, The New York Times, Autostraddle, and New York magazine's The Cut, among other outlets, as well as on WNYC and other NPR member stations. I love working with both adults and teens, and have taught creative writing at the 92nd Street Y and at Manhattanville College. I've earned fellowships and scholarships from the New York Public Library, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and the Tent Creative Writing program, and my poetry has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Specialties: Line editing, developmental editing. Translating complex research into accessible, compelling words. Writing gracefully about tough subjects. And the ability to think big-picture while also zooming in on nitty-gritty details.
