As co-founder and Chief Scientist, I conceived of original designs, technology, and applications for a new medical monitoring technology. I also helped raise private venture capital, private corporate backing, and contributed scientific guidance to product development, marketing, IP protection, investor relations, reporting and regulatory approval processes.

As the General Vice President, in a two-year period I raised over $4M for basic and applied research in biosensor applications. I also managed new and ongoing R&D programs ranging across original concepts, sponsor and client identification, proposal generation, contract negotiations, multi-project management, and multi-project execution. I also developed and executed marketing strategies, including program reporting, conference presentations, trade shows, publications, and private investor relations.

I developed the field of Neuroengineering, including novel signal processing and classification algorithms, brain-computer interfaces, models and measures of cognitive function. At Ames I previously served as Chief of the Human Information Processing Research Branch. There I managed a branch of 50+ scientists, engineers, and contractors. I also built and ran a $13M program called Perceptual and Physiological Stressors and Factors, and was a co-architect of the Human-Centered Computing Program.

I established and ran a research laboratory where my students and I analyzed the early processes in visual-auditory interactions in the human brain. A landmark discovery was that physiological responses in the first 150 milliseconds of auditory perception are strongly influenced by concurrent visual information, such as in the McGurk Effect. I also raised funds for, invented and launched the world's first on-line Internet Psychology Laboratory. I also taught courses on human sensation and perception and human factors to undergraduates and advanced topics in physiological psychology to graduate students.

I developed the field of Biopsychometric Assessment and managed a multi-center program of research in this area. Biopsychometric Assessment research provided knowledge and methods for improving personnel selection, classification and training using behavioral and physiological techniques. Here, I also started a continuing line of research on mental state estimation and advanced signal processing algorithms. My team was the first in the world to apply wavelet decomposition and neural networks to the feature extraction and classification of brain signals.
