My professional career has been interesting, diverse and rewarding. After five years of graduate school training, I received a Ph.D. in Physiology from George Washington University. I began my actual scientific career by doing a post-doctoral fellowship (1984-1986) at the University of Texas Medical School (Houston). From 1986 to 2003, I was involved in drug discovery and development at three different pharmaceutical companies. While at Otsuka, I was a group leader of a drug discovery and development team for treating Inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD). In this role, I supervised up to 5 FTE’s and provided mentoring to members of my research group. During my pharmaceutical research career, our research teams helped to get FDA approval for one drug, and advanced two other drugs into clinical trials. Subsequently, I began a 10-year (2003-2013) faculty position at the Penn State College of Medicine (Hershey, PA). While at Penn State, I continued ongoing research related to IBD, as well as infectious colitis and arthritis. These research collaborations resulted in the funding of 15 grants/contracts with pharmaceutical/biotechnology companies. Overall, I brought approximately 1.8 million dollars of funding into the University. While in the Pharmacology Department at Penn State, I also became involved in teaching for PhD, MD and MD/PhD students. I joined the California Northstate University College of Pharmacy (CNUCOP) in December of 2013, as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences. In March of 2015, I became the interim Dean of Research for the CNUCOP. My fellow faculty members and administrative officials showed their confidence in me, by selecting me as the full time Assistant Dean of Research for CNUCOP in July of 2015. I was promoted to Full Professor in April of 2020. I retired from CNUCOP in June of 2020. I am currently engaged in consulting, as primarily related to Pre-Clinical IBD drug discovery. I am also open to adjunct faculty positions.

Associate Professor/Assistant Dean Of ResearchCalifornia Northstate College Of Pharmacy Dec 2013 - Oct 2019Elk Grove, California 95757I am the Assistant Dean for Research Affairs at the CNU College of Pharmacy. As a faculty member, I am also involved in teaching Pharm.D. students about GI diseases and Immunology. Also, I am a member of various committees related to the current functions and future goals of the University. Currently, I have a research collaboration with Visionary Pharmaceuticals related to drug development for treating IBD. I am also involved in natural products research related to IBD. -
Associate Professor Of PharmacologyPenn State College Of Medicine Jul 2003 - Nov 2013Hershey, PaInvolved in inflammation-related research. Specifically, we have been establishing relevant approaches and models, for evaluating the roles of various therapeutic agents for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Infectious Colitis and Arthritis. These approaches are related to ongoing drug development projects with industrial collaborators. These projects have included evaluating sphingosine kinase inhibitors for arthritis and IBD (Apogee Biotechnology), anti-IBD agents (P&G Pharmaceuticals), novel lipid formulations for IBD (Baxter Health Care) and probiotics (BioBalance Corporation, Ganeden Biotech). Our current project involves using relevant in vitro and in vivo techniques to evaluate the effects of a novel immunosuppressive drug (Vidofludimus from 4SC-AG) on key IL-17 related intracellular signal transduction pathways. Currently, I have supervisory responsibility for one technical scientist. Also, I am teaching pharmacology and gastroenterology classes for MD and Ph.D. students.

Senior Scientist/Group Leader Gi ResearchOtsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. 1996 - 2003Rockville, MdInvolved in conducting gastrointestinal inflammation research. Specifically, establishing relevant in vitro and animal models for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, as well as NSAID induced gastric damage and arthritis. A major drug screening program involved establishing appropriate in vitro assays to evaluate proteasome and NF-kappa B inhibitors for the treatment of IBD. I supervised and maintained an internal, as well as an external, research program. Direct supervisory responsibility for 3 technical scientists. Also, an active member of a clinical research team. -
Senior ScientistProcter & Gamble 1992 - 1996Cincinnati, OhHead of Upper GI Research group. Our group mainly worked on drug candidates for RX to OTC switches. Involved in research, related to the development of drugs, for the treatment of functional upper gastrointestinal disorders. Research initiatives also included the utilization of experimental esophagitis and NSAID induced gastric damage models. Supervised/maintained an internal, as well as external, research program. Acquired experience in the IND submission process, as well as clinical trial methodology. Direct supervisory responsibility for two technical scientists -
Senior ScientistRhone-Poulenc Rorer 1986 - 1992Involved in conceptualizing new ideas for drug development related to gastrointestinal disorders. Research projects involved developing drugs for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Peptic Ulcer Disease. I was involved in a 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor/LTB4-receptor antagonist drug development program for IBD therapy. Supervisory responsibility for two technical scientists. -
Postdoctoral FellowUniversity Of Texas Medical School, Physiology Department Nov 1984 - Aug 1986Houston, TxPost-doctoral work ( Leonard Johnson Laboratory) involved primarily the localization and characterization of a functional role for polyamine biosynthetic enzymes (e.g., ornithine decarboxylase) in the rat small intestine. Investigated a possible role for these enzymes in the restitution of the gastric mucosa, following injury with damaging agents. Techniques utilized were enterocyte isolation, enzyme assays, nucleic acid extraction/determination, receptor binding, and ussing chamber methodology.
