Profile bio

About Léo A. Farhat - Phd

With over 16 years of experience in components engineering, I've dedicated my career to supporting the space industry by developing and improving RF and Passive components. Based at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC), the technical hub of the European Space Agency (ESA), I am ESA’s expert in RF and non-RF passive components. In my role, I've seen space technologies change: We used to focus on reliability and performance, but now, it's all about speed to market and cutting costs without compromising quality. I enjoy tackling these challenges by shaping ESA projects to fit in this new era.My daily tasks include selecting, approving, and resolving quality issues related to passive components, as well as providing technical expertise through all project phases, including approval, evaluation, testing, and applications of passive and RF passive components. In parallel, I've been lucky to play a strategic role in several ESA Technology Programmes (TDE, ARTES, etc.), helping develop and qualify components crucial for mission success. From initiating ideas and implementing R&D activities to securing space qualifications, I've been managing a diverse range of projects with budgets over 20 million euros (see Projects’ section). My ultimate goal? To support the European industry ‘s position in the fast-changing space industry. By identifying strategic technology needs for upcoming missions and implementing development activities, I ensure ESA remains a pioneer in space exploration. I also support ESCC with audits and any technical topics related to evaluation and qualification. But that's not all—I also assume the role of EEE part engineer, overseeing the selection and procurement of various EEE components for ESA missions (i.e. ARIEL, BIOMASS, EarthCARE, PROBA 3, etc.). Whether it's Integrated Circuits or RF actives, you name it—I'm on it, ensuring compliance with space standards and keeping a keen eye on quality control and adequate procurement approach depending on the class of the space missions.I look forward to connecting with fellow professionals, innovators, and enthusiasts who share my passion for space exploration, particularly in components engineering. And I'd like to invite you to join me at SPCD, the only international conference dediacted to passive components for space: http://www.spcd.space

Listed skills include Interfaces, Defense, Security, Technical Support, and 3 others.
