Leo Klomp obtained his undergraduate degree and his PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Utrecht University. He was trained as biochemist and molecular cell biologist and defended his PhD thesis in 1995. He subsequently received 3 yrs of postdoctoral training in Medical Genetics at Washington University, St. Louis, USA. In 2001 he was appointed staff member in the department of metabolic diseases at the University Medical Center Utrecht, where he became head of research. From 2008-2010 he headed the department of metabolic and endocrine diseases at the University Medical Center Utrecht, where he combined academic teaching, laboratory diagnostics and fundamental research on inherited disorders of metabolism. He was coordinator of the honours program in Biomedical Sciences and served in the scientific boards of several national and international professional organisations. He also served on the scientific boards of several national charity funds. He supervised 11 PhD theses and co-authored 99 research papers. Leo Klomp was the first recipient of the Distinguished Hepatology Award from the Dutch Society of Hepatology.In 2011, he founded the Grants Desk at the VU University and VU Medical Center Amsterdam, of which he was acting director until march 2018. He was senior strategic adviser for research grants and external finance and acted as liaison with several public and private organisations, including the European Commission. In 2018-2019 he served as head of the department "Forum, Advice and Research" of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Starting in June 2019, Leo Klomp is acting teamcoördinator in the department of Medical Technology at the Dutch Health and Youth Care Inspectorate. He leads a team responsible for monitoring and promoting optimum safety and quality of medical devices and medical technology in order to enhance the quality and safety of care for members of the public.
