The SIGMA (Ship Integrated Geometrical Modularity Approach) ships class is a DSNS (Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding design) and characterizes itself that it can be build according the wishes from the customer. The ships are operable in various tasks in both high and low force spectrums, so availability plays an important role. Because there is currently an uncertainty about the availability of the main engines due to lack of knowledge about the technical condition, the maximum life span of parts is not yet optimally used and there is still a lot of planned downtime, it is important to switch from the current corrective and preventive maintenance policy towards a predictive maintenance policy. First of all, there was insufficient insight into the parameters that indicate the dominant failure mechanisms. For this reason, a Failure Mode and Effect Analysis were created first, so that the most critical failure modes could be determined. After that, the corresponding condition indicators could be determined. For some failure modes there are several indicators that indicate the failure mode, the fastest detectable indicator should be chosen according the potential failure curve. On the basis of this information, the type of sensor required for monitoring the condition can be determined. The tricky part is collecting the data and especially failure data, which are required for the input of the prediction model to determine the remaining useful life of the relevant components. This new maintenance policy will be the future. -
