Boston Barrier Project for the Environment Agency

Working as a Lead QS within the commercial team within the AMP6 Integrated Operation Solutions (IOS) Alliance contract (NEC3 Option C), joined by partners Barhale Plc, Morrison Utility Services Ltd and Anglian Water Services Ltd. Together we are working towards expected delivery of circa £250m of work over AMP6. Based in Anglian Waters Lincoln office but also working in Anglian Water’s Whitlingham, Norwich office I am a Line Manager for the Assistant QS’ whilst also being personally responsible for managing circa £10m pa across local jobs and parcels of jobs.

Working as part of the AMP6 IMR(W) delivery team in an alliance with Anglian Water and Clancy Docrwa I worked as part of the commercial team on the reactive maintenance and repair contract whilst reporting directly to the Senior Quantity Surveyor and Commercial Manager. During my time in the IMR(W) contract I was personally responsible for managing circa £4m in works. Whilst working on the IMR(W) commercial team I still balanced my degree studies at Nottingham Trent University on a day-release bases. Typical roles and responsibilities involved pre and post subcontract management, including managing down subcontract liabilities, chairing meetings, keeping accurate works records and general administration of the contract, such as completing payments, early warning notices and the like in accordance with the NEC3 standard terms.During my time in this role I developed skills in using construction accounting/reporting software such as COINS and SAP. I used this software in aiding the generation of cost data for analysis and reporting as part of the CVR procedure alongside the Senior Quantity Surveyor and Commercial Manager.

Working as part of a busy team in a client satisfaction driven environment I am working alongside Project QS’s, Senior QS’s and Associates within the residential and care sector. Whilst being sponsored through my degree I am gaining unattainable experience whilst working in a busy and thriving industry and also studying to enhance my knowledge and understanding of the construction industry and its complex structure. I have been involved in the construction of 6 new build 80-bed care homes for Care UK and residential schemes varying between small 20 unit builds to substantial 300 unit schemes in London. I am currently taking a lead role on 3 residential projects all in excess of 100 units and am providing both a cost management and employers agent service.I have progress well and at speed within AECOM which I believe is due to both my previous experience and also being inspired and holding a keen interest of the construction industry. Key Responsibilities:Preparation and analysis of feasibility and viability estimates;Preparation of progress and cost and value for money reports (inclusive of value engineering);Preparation and analysis of post and pre contract procurement, tenders and contract documentation including bills of quantities and CSA’s (in accordance with NRM);Chairing or meetings and minute taking for reporting purposes;Substantial knowledge of JCT 2011 Contracts;Completing valuations and measurement of works completed in an agreed period and administering payments;Providing professional advice to clients with regards to procurement strategy, specific maintenance costs, contractual disputes and the like; Benchmarking of current and historical data to both cost works accurately and provide benchmark reports to clients;Networking with clients and members of other disciplines in order to maintain professional relationships to aid in future business development;Preparation and analysis of project cash flows.

Working as part of a busy team in a driven environment I have worked alongside the Senior Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Manager, contracts manager and managing director gaining experience through practical learning within a successful ‘FRC’ sub-contractor. I have been involved in projects of various capacities with values ranging from £60K - £6m all within the civil engineering sector, focusing on water treatment works and energy form waste facilities. I have worked alongside various contractors including Black & Veatch, Four-D (Costain), Vinci, Balfour Beatty and clients including Wessex Water, Southern Water and Thames Water. I also worked alongside the senior quantity surveyor for 4D (Costain) when I was not provided with enough work to fill the day, I was assisting with tender enquires and creating attendances spreadsheets.Key responsibilities:To assist the QS with commercial administration and management on a number of live projects or projects at pre-construction phase.Liaise with the QS and Commercial Manager in the management of day to day cost control, monitoring and reporting. Producing monthly CVR reports. Measure the progress on live projects, assist in submitting valuation and final accounts. Assist the QS over contractual issues and take action as required. Developing and maintaining professional relationships with the Client/ other contractors, to help future business development. Taking off quantities from contractual drawings. Writing method statements and performing risk assessments, whilst ensuring that all work is carried out in accordance with these. Preparing Bills of Quantities for tender enquiries (in accordance with SMM7 & CESMM) I also compiled and submitted all required documents and carried out all required tasks to gain ‘Safe Contractor’ status.

During my time at East Yorkshire Glazing I developed excellent customer service skills and the ability to work well in a busy and task driven environment. Key responsibilities:  Sales and marketing for a County wide company. Working in a target driven environment. Maintaining a good rapport with customers. Developing excellent communication and listening skills. Gaining a good knowledge about all the company’s products and services. Administration duties including raising invoices and booking appointments of viewings.
