CurrentI currently serve as the physical design team lead for the Duke Energy Carolinas team at Burns & McDonnell. My role is relatively catch-all, as I do whatever the team needs, be it pricing, technical guidance for junior engineers, quality control for projects, site visits, physical design on my own projects, field consults, and more.

My primary job is to evaluate applications for machines for use in permissible environments, namely underground coal mines. I analyze provided drawings to determine whether or not they comply with federal regulations, and also decide whether they could potentially pose as a hazard for underground environments. I have also conducted evaluative work on intrinsically safe equipment for the same environments.I have been sent on an accident investigation for a fatality in an underground coal mine, and helped determine the root cause of said accident, and procedures necessary to prevent any recurrences.
Tutor
My job was to help students attain a higher score on a bevy of standardized tests, ranging from the SAT to the ACT to AP exams. C2 provides materials, but I also take personal time to customize lessons for students who find certain topics difficult. I work with students of many different educational backgrounds; while some have a score of 2000+ and are reaching for that perfect score, others are struggling with scores in the 1200s, hoping to break 1500. Either way, I did my best to make sure that they reach as high as they can. Simultaneously, I want to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. Current high school students already have plenty of responsibilities, from school to homework to extracurricular activities. I want to make sure that learning at a tutoring program like C2 is not only helpful, but something they want to do. With that mentality, I became both the most popular and the most successful tutor at C2 within a month. Many of my students were able to secure acceptance to Ivy League programs. For some of my more disenfranchised students, I was able to help secure them acceptance to and even scholarships for prestigious and reputable public programs (University of California schools, University of Michigan, University of Illinois, etc).I still retain a love for teaching; I reluctantly left the job because of opportunity and pay constraints, but I continue to tutor part time and as volunteer work now.

I was one of two project managers coordinating a community partnership project with the University Y on campus. We led a class of students in an interdisciplinary project that promoted sustainability in the campus area, starting with various programs initiated at the Y. Although listed as an engineering class, and sponsored by the engineering department, I was able to work with architecture and business students as well. We coordinated the skill sets available to us to produce the optimal outcomes.Simultaneously I was enrolled in ENG598 to learn more about teaching and leading students. This was important as most of the other project managers were graduate students, while I was only a senior. That means some of my students were the same age as me. I had to properly disregard the lack of age gap and be a leader in the classroom. While I already felt comfortable with that sort of role, the class solidified my ability to work with others.
University Housing Network Technician
The job begins with the move in of freshman students. Not only did I help welcome to campus life, but I also aided them in basic internet setup, along with a multitude of other computer issues. After the hectic opening week, the job transitions into more of an IT role. Residents in the university dormitories could file tickets regarding their internet and computer issues. The tickets were then worked on by the network technicians. Through my time on campus, I worked in the two largest dormitories, and eventually on to one of the graduate dormitories on campus. I also completed hundreds of tickets addressing a variety of issues, from the incredibly mundane (user failed to plug in switch) to the incredibly interesting (working with the flash virus that affected all the Macs on campus).My job duties also included shifts at the dormitory computer labs. If users did not wish to submit a ticket online (which usually meant visits to their rooms), then they could approach us in a neutral meeting place to address their issues.
Residential And Project Adviser
The University of Illinois recently instituted a new program to help high school students adjust to being an engineering major in college. The program is called Illinois Engineering First-Year Experience (or IEFX), and brought in students to take several classes during the second session of summer, while living in a college dormitory. Not only was I their adviser in class, but I also lived with them as their residential adviser. I served to acclimate students to living on a college campus, helping them juggle their budding social life and their academic duties.While the students were allowed to select a class of their choosing, they was also a mandatory projects class. I helped manage multiple projects, while advising on several more. I took care to balance giving direction and advice, while avoiding being too heavy handed or micromanaging them. Although I was the harshest grader, and forced them to practice presentations more than any other RPA, they were rewarded by having the best projects (graded and evaluated by other RPAs and various industry representatives). Some projects were published, and others were approached by the University for implementation on campus.
Special Projects Intern
My time with HGSI mainly revolved around one large project: the tracking of time-sensitive biological samples that made their respective ways around the various campuses and labs. By having a suitable alert system, lab workers would be more cognizant of which samples required immediate attention, rather than relying on an outdated and unreliable notepad system.I began by interacting with both management and lab workers to determine the information that was required at the various stages of production: the production line, transportation, quality assurance (upstream and downstream), and packaging. Next, I formed queries in SQL that separated the database into more useable information packets. I then used HTML, CSS, and .js to develop a functional intranet site that housed the SQL and displayed what I had created. Before I left, I worked with IT to integrate my design into the existing databases, allowing it to be vetted and tested after I left.In the years since, HGSI has been absorbed by GSK. While they do not use my system (it was admittedly extremely rudimentary and had some very overt bugs), it inspired them to dedicate a team to develop something similar for the acquired HGSI campuses.
