About Leon Langley
I went into education because I really thought I could make a difference in the lives of teen-agers. There is something challenging about that age group which has always caused me to stay tuned and committed. They are so close to adulthood and even the knuckleheads can be directed back to the "light" in some cases. Also, I love teaching history and turning the kids into involved citizens, no matter where their beliefs are on the political spectrum. Finally, I got to coach and there is nothing I enjoy more than a day on a ball field. Well, maybe a day on the beach or the bay or in the mountains or ... You get my drift. In our industry, I see the same passion I saw in the best educators and we can make a difference in the lives of children. To me hell would be working in a job where there is no passion for what you do. Life is not worth living without passion.

State Director Of Pupil Transportation
I believe the most important duty I have is to assist my 24 local directors.Visibility by regular visits, phone calls, or emails "just because" is my rule. They know I am accessible at any time. Their job is the toughest job I ever had, even more difficult for me than being a school administrator.I have time to be proactive and in touch with changes and trends. As a local director, you are always reactive.I am the conduit amongst them to share best practices I observe on visits.Anything I can do to increase their base knowledge regarding state and federal regulations is always appreciated. I make them stop and look at the forest while still mindful of the trees.I am their sounding board, shoulder to unburden on, and taskmaster to remind them of what matters most. This job is the second best job I've ever had; teaching and coaching will always be first.
State Director Of Pupil Transportation
Director Of Transportation And Athletics
Secondary School Administrator
I worked as both a middle and high school administrator. I administered testing programs, special education at a time of great change, athletics, did many years of bus duty, and observed and evaluated hundreds of teachers. The most difficult task is going through the steps to remove a teacher, never easy but sometimes necessary for the good of the kids. I always reminded myself that I was taking someone's job away but always kids first. This experience and approach should be our "gospel" when it comes to school bus drivers. First, do everything possible to improve their safety performance or their interactions with the school community, DOCUMENT your steps, and then if there is limited improvement, do what you have to do for the well-being of the kids, school administrators, other drivers, and your own staff. Creating the class and teacher schedules ended up being one of my favorite duties. In secondary school education, it is one of the most complex tasks and can have a tremendous impact on your school's success. You spend many week-end days, late week-nights, and early week-mornings (it is amazing what you can get done at 4 a.m.). Like everything in life at which you may be successful, I had great mentors.
