My name is Leon Rothmann; currently I am a SHE Specialist at a Chemical Company based in Newcastle Kwazulu Natal.After completing matric I joined the SA Air-force where I complete my apprenticeship as an Aircraft maintenance mechanic. After four years of being far from my hometown I decided to leave the Air-force and come back to my hometown.I then got a position at Newcastle local council in the Fire department as a Fireman. I immediately started studying in this field to better my knowledge and to be able to be promoted into higher positions, I also did an Instructors course thus being able to give necessary training (I was the first to attain this in the Newcastle Fire Service). Within a few years because of my studies and qualifications attained I was promoted up to the level of Station officer.My next opportunity was at Karbochem Pty(Ltd) (at that stage DOW Chemicals) and I have been with this company since 1999. I was appointed as a Safety and Fire Prevention Officer, I took this position as I wanted to expand my field of experience and because of better future job opportunities within the SHE field. Since then I have been promoted to SHE Coordinator and then SHE Specialist. I am currently fulfilling the duties of the SHE Manager. I am also legally appointed as the Nominated Rail Safety Manager.I have also completed my National Diploma in Safety Management and my Baccalaureus Technologiae in Safety Management through UNISA.
