About Leon Wu

Currently a Research Assistant for a project that looks to investigate the greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater treatment plants, and using mathematical modelling to determine operational conditions to reduce emissions. As a Graduate Process Engineer at Hatch, I have been involved in the design of lithium and nickel-cobalt processing plants. I have prepared client deliverables such as equipment sizing calculations, process descriptions, and OPEX, and collaborated with multidisciplinary teams to meet project requirements. I have also used Microsoft Excel, Visio, and COMOS for calculations and creating PFDs, BFDs, and P&IDs.My education background in Biological and Chemical Engineering from The University of Queensland has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to apply engineering principles to biological and chemical systems. Furthermore, I have successfully completed a biotechnology course which has equipped me with the understanding of QA/QC, regulatory compliance and real world applications of biotechnology. My experience includes working in a PC 2 laboratory as a research assistant at AIBN, where I worked on Arduino coding, electric circuit assembly, and cell culturing. I also completed a thesis at Urban Utilities, where I conducted on-site sampling, experiments, and tests on wastewater treatment. Additionally, I was selected as a Research Scholar at UQ, where I conducted a comprehensive literature review on Scope 1 and 2 emissions from the wastewater industry, and critically evaluated existing methodologies and identified gaps and opportunities for improvement. I am interested in the wastewater and pharmaceutical/bioprocess industry, but I am open to learning about any field of engineering or industry. I am motivated by the challenge and innovation that engineering offers, and I value teamwork, learning, and sustainability.

Unfortunately, laid off due to organisational restructuring and economic downturn at Hatch.Project Experience: QPM TECH Project – Feasibility Study - Contributed to the feasibility stage of the QPM TECH project in Townsville, aiming to produce 16kt nickel metal and 1.75kt cobalt metal contained in nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate, respectively, from high-grade laterite ore. - Responsibilities included preparing engineering deliverables for clients and the mechanical team for detailed equipment design across all areas of the plant. - Deliverables included PFD/P&ID drafting in Visio/COMOS, process sizing calculations in Excel (e.g., heat exchangers, pumps, tanks), RAM modeling, and report writing of process descriptions. LiChem Lithium Processing Plant – Scoping Study - Participated in a lithium processing plant scoping study for LiChem, aimed at producing 50,000 tpa of lithium carbonate from spodumene ore, with the purpose of the project being to determine if LiChem’s flowsheet was superior to existing lithium carbonate flowsheets. - Responsible for producing CAPEX and OPEX for a conventional method to produce lithium carbonate; sulfation. - Deliverables included PFDs, PDCs, mechanical equipment lists, CAPEX, OPEX, and conducting modeling in SYSCAD, while maintaining regular communication and coordination with the Hatch team in Canada to ensure project objectives were achieved. Lithium Universe Limited – Pre-Feasibility Study - Involved in the pre-feasibility stage of a 16,000 tpa lithium carbonate plant in Quebec for Lithium Universe. - Responsibilities included producing PFDs/BFDs in Visio and interpreting equipment vendor data, PDC and PDB from past projects to make informed decisions for Lithium Universe deliverables.
