AXA operated separate life and general insurance companies in Singapore that were consolidated into a single composite insurer in 2017.I joined as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer and, over time, assumed additional responsibilities as Corporate Secretary, Data Privacy Officer, and Crisis Management co-leader.Responsibilities• Rebooted the legal and compliance functions.• Directed all in-house legal services, including dispute resolution and reputational risk management.• Designed and defended corporate governance framework and regulatory risk management program, including fitness and propriety, anti-corruption, and anti-money laundering.• Developed data privacy framework.• Oversaw all liaison with the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the management of regulatory enquiries/ inspections.• Set the standard for market conduct, including investigations and consequence management.• Led the resolution of escalated customer complaints and the conduct of whistleblowing investigations.• Closely supported negotiations with partners that included airlines, motorcar distributors, postal services, and digital platform operators.Notable Outcomeso Led the team that consistently enjoyed the highest staff engagement scores and the lowest turnover throughout the duration of my tenure.o Achieved two successive upgrades in the company’s regulatory risk rating by the Monetary Authority of Singapore.o Oversaw the integration of AXA Life and General Insurance into a single composite insurer in 2017.o Led the crisis management team that successfully contained a zero-day exploit cybersecurity incident in 2017 with minimal sanction/ publicity. o Steered the company through Covid-19 and ensured continued employee wellbeing and no business interruption for over 2 years.o Oversaw the sale of AXA Singapore to HSBC and subsequent integration with HSBC Life.

ACR was a pan-Asian large-risk reinsurance start-up. It was capitalised at USD 850 million, and its shareholders included 3i Group, Morgan Stanley, Khazanah Nasional, Temasek Holdings, Marubeni, and Dubai Group. I set up ACR’s Legal, Compliance, and Corporate Secretarial functions.Responsibilities• Provided Legal, Compliance, and Corporate Secretarial support for business strategy and day-to-day operations.• Closely supported the establishment of branch office in Hong Kong, and rep offices in Vietnam, Taiwan, China, India, Korea, and Japan.• Successfully negotiated USD 300 million retakaful joint venture with Khazanah Nasional and Dubai Group, and closely supported the establishment of operations in Malaysia, Bahrain and DIFC.• Established group-wide compliance and governance framework.• Supervised joint venture operations as shareholder representative.• Managed relationships with multiple regulators.
