About Leonardo Casali

In 2001, I decided to dive into the field of information technology 👨‍💻 to develop systems and solutions that could assist companies and organizations in their processes and contribute to making the world a better place.Despite my parents working in healthcare and their desire for me to become a doctor, I swore off wearing a white coat in a hospital 👨‍⚕️, even though I grew up surrounded by one. Ironically, my first software project was for a large health insurance provider, followed by the second and the third. Around the fourth or fifth, hospitals and other healthcare units started appearing, adding a bit of variety to the mix 🤷‍♂️.The result was unexpected. I discovered that I am passionate about technology and software development, as well as deeply interested in medicine and the individuals that make up this network of care.During my years in technology, I had the opportunity to work with great professionals. I fell in love with UI/UX long before it became a concern (2006). It was there that I understood that products tell stories far beyond the source code, and true technology solves real-world problems. I am grateful for those years and the surprised comments like "He is a programmer and also designs interfaces 😧."While working on projects for various healthcare providers, I traveled across Brazil, meeting incredible people and gaining insights into the realities of healthcare companies and their challenges. In 2020, I became the Superintendent of Healthcare for one of Brazil's largest healthcare providers—a non-medical professional with an IT background, blending in among the many white coats 🏥. For three and a half years, I learned a lot about managing a massive and complex million-dollar business. Together, we achieved lasting results and significant organizational growth. However, the exhaustive work journey was stifling my creativity. In 2021, I decided to venture into entrepreneurship. Axtio was founded with the goal of bringing modern processes and technologies to the essence of healthcare institutions, and despite not being a multimillion-dollar company, it's a success. At least for me and our clients. My advice to everyone:🔥 Stay curious. Never let go of your curiosity.🔥 Never stop using your voice.🔥 Always remain creative and find your 'personal world.'🔥 Learn English, Excel, and be cautious in partnerships.I'm open to insights on hospital processes, technology, startups, as well as opportunities for podcasts and events. My messages are open to everyone; feel free to reach out for a chat.

  • Unimed João Pessoa
Superintendent Of Innovation And Healthcare Provision
Unimed João Pessoa Jul 2020 - Jul 2023
    João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil
In July 2020, I was promoted to Superintendent of Innovation and Healthcare Provision at Unimed João Pessoa, with the mission to accelerate technological transformation in the healthcare sectors. This role encompassed 13 areas and around 780 employees, including Ambulatory Units, Special Therapy Centers, Command Center, Network and Credentialing, Telehealth, Medical Auditing, Home Care, Oncology, and Billing.I assumed this position during the COVID-19 pandemic, integrating the healthcare strategy with the IT team. We developed a telemedicine system and, within three weeks, launched a lab collection operation that performed thousands of tests. These efforts positioned us as a reference in the state, with excellent results in handling the pandemic. We restructured the ambulatory units, increasing consultations by over 300%, reducing the cost per consultation by 60%, and cutting the number of tests by 74%, significantly improving customer satisfaction and financial performance.I was responsible for designing the Espaço Vida, an advanced therapy center that boosted health plan sales and improved healthcare outcomes, avoiding unnecessary surgeries while achieving 93% patient satisfaction.Additionally, I implemented a Command Center to monitor over 400 beds and dozens of accredited providers in real-time, integrating key operational indicators. We also digitized the entire patient journey, as well as the billing and auditing processes, enhancing security and efficiency through electronic workflows.
  • Unimed João Pessoa
    Health Provision Operations Manager
Unimed João Pessoa Nov 2017 - Jul 2020
    João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil
In 2017, I was selected to manage the Operations Department at Unimed João Pessoa as part of an acceleration project developed in partnership with Unimed Belo Horizonte, aimed at modernizing the operator's healthcare operations. My department was responsible for managing, automating, and controlling claims information, as well as the patient journey and its interfaces with operational sectors.Upon taking the role, I found a team of 47 employees, many lacking the necessary skills for their positions, alongside significant political influence that hindered efficiency. We worked closely with the HR department to restructure the team, implementing a job and salary program and strengthening the organizational culture. We also digitalized manual processes for authorizations, medical billing, auditing, and invoicing, reducing the payment cycle from 27 days to 4 days. The restructuring allowed us to reduce the team size from 47 to 7 employees, significantly cutting operational costs.Additionally, we developed an automated engine for analyzing medical billing and claims data, which resulted in a 1.8% average monthly reduction in the loss ratio (approximately R$2.1 million), improving risk management and operational efficiency.
  • Unimed João Pessoa
    It Coordinator
Unimed João Pessoa Jan 2017 - Nov 2017
    João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil
After many years of developing, implementing, and conducting business analysis for health insurance companies throughout Brazil, I was hired by Unimed João Pessoa as IT Coordinator. In this role, I was responsible for managing the development and support workflows, as well as organizing existing systems, which were outdated and presented significant challenges in terms of structure and organization.I was already familiar with the organization from my previous work as a consultant, which gave me an initial advantage. With this knowledge, I began restructuring the team with a focus on assessing and repositioning existing talents, ensuring that each team member was allocated according to their skills and experiences. I also identified the need for reinforcements in specific areas, bringing in new professionals to complement the established teams. In addition to reorganizing the team, we introduced a Project Management Office (PMO) to enhance transparency and fluidity in the development of IT projects. This change allowed for better direction of efforts, creating synergy among teams and aligning demands with clear timelines and objectives. The PMO brought more organization to ongoing projects and greater visibility for stakeholders, facilitating strategic decision-making.During the 11 months I held this position before being promoted, we achieved significant progress in the organization and professionalization of internal processes. My contributions were crucial in elevating the competitiveness and efficiency of Unimed João Pessoa, positioning the company at a new level of technological and operational performance, commensurate with its size and relevance in the healthcare sector.

  • Focco Soluções De Gestão | A Cincly Company
    Senior Software Architect
Focco Soluções De Gestão | A Cincly Company Jun 2012 - Oct 2015
Caxias Do Sul, Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil
At Focco, I served as the software architect leading the migration of the company’s primary ERP system to the web, a highly requested but complex and costly endeavor due to the size and legacy of the system. Working closely with my team and key stakeholders, we defined the architecture, standardization, and technologies, ensuring a gradual migration of the platform (originally built in Oracle Forms 6i) in a way that was seamless for our clients. We transitioned the entire business logic to stored procedures in the Oracle database and implemented C# ASP.NET service facades within a service-oriented architecture (SOA). This approach allowed us to connect both the legacy Oracle Forms front-end and the new web interface built with Angular/Material. The new interface had a significant advantage—enabling the seamless use of both new programs written in Angular and legacy Oracle Forms 6i programs via a JNLP interface developed in Java.Additionally, we developed a tool that automated system updates for over 300 clients. This tool managed the deployment of both maintenance packages and new versions, from database updates to artifact compilation and encryption. As a result, the average ERP client update time decreased from 8 months to 3 weeks, improving product quality and significantly reducing maintenance demand by consolidating the number of active versions. We also built a tool to monitor ERP usage, enabling effective control over client user licenses and third-party connections to the databases. This provided the company with a clear view of revenue losses and maintenance costs caused by unauthorized modifications.During my three years at Focco, we made exponential strides in technology, architecture, and standardization across our products and services.
