I'm a reporter at The Mercury News, part of the Bay Area News Group, where I primarily cover demographics and income inequality, as well as small businesses and the unequal devastation COVID-19 has caused on the region's communities of color.

My duties include reporting short and medium-term investigative projects for online, radio and TV, ranging from radio spots to 4 minutes features on topics including health, education, public finance and immigration. Other responsibilities include requesting, using, and analyzing public data, building and maintaining databases and requesting public records. I also create multimedia elements such as graphics and interactive elements, as well as social media and newsletter campaigns, for investigative projects.

As an investigative assistant I conducted background research using public data, records and online directories. I also wrote stories individually or provided additional information for other reporters' stories. I also translated stories from English to Spanish.

My duties as editor-in-chief went beyond the traditional managerial and lead editor responsibilities. I led the redevelopment of the newspaper, changing the publication schedule from four times a week to twice a week. The redesign also included a new online-oriented production process, a redesigned website, re-vamped social media activity and a push into mobile platforms.

I edited columns, assign stories and managed content with a team of volunteer writers. I also requested photos and graphics and wrote headlines.

I attended weekly editorial meetings and wrote a column each week in a wide range of topics. Starting in 2011 I was named the senior staff writer for the opinion section.

My duties as intern ranged from assisting with writing, editing and processing citywide proclamations, to helping write press releases and assisting with social media management.
