With a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences and extensive experience in plant science research, I am passionate about enhancing crop resilience to abiotic stress. My academic journey has been marked by hands-on work in different areas of plant biology including physiology, ecology, molecular, and most recently plant phenotyping, which I have applied to different projects.I recently completed a role as a Postdoctoral Associate at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, where I developed image-based phenotyping workflows using PlantCV software (Python) and data processing in R-studio to study abiotic stress responses in maize. I analyzed a wide range of RGB and NIR imaging data, as well as conducted microscopy-based stomata analysis, to understand the early responses of maize to heat and drought stresses. I had the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art phenotyping technology alongside a talented and diverse team.During my time as a Ph.D. student at Colorado State University, I explored the mechanisms of Selenium hyperaccumulation in a plant called Stanleya pinnata L. (Brassicaceae). My goal was to understand how this plant was able to accumulate toxic levels of Selenium without showing signs of stress. I utilized recombinant DNA technology to study two different genes from Stanleya pinnata expressed in Arabidopsis thaliana, the SpSultr1;2, (codes for a sulfate transmembrane transporter expected to be selenate specific), and the SpAPS2 (codes for an enzyme responsible to convert toxic inorganic selenate to non-toxic organic forms of selenium in chloroplast). I worked with cultures of competent DH5-α E. coli and Agrobacterium tumefaciens (GV3101) in transformation experiments and analyzed data collected from ICP-OES, PCR, electrophoresis, root length phenotype data (ImageJ), protein separation via SDS-PAGE and protein expression (Western Blot) and enzymatic activity (spectrophotometer) to learn more about these genes. Throughout my career, I have developed a robust skill set that includes molecular techniques, phenotyping, and data analysis, with a strong focus on practical applications in plant science. Recently, I decided to transition out of academia and explore opportunities in industry. This choice came after much reflection on my professional and personal goals, and while leaving behind years of academic training and a passion for teaching and mentoring was not easy, it felt like the right step forward. I’m eager to apply my expertise to innovative projects and collaborations that address critical challenges in agriculture and beyond.
