Leon Dijkstra (Dutch, born 1979) has a background in graphic design and developed a special interest in typography and optical kinetic art. In recent years he focuses on the research of printed typography that becomes kinetic or three-dimensional on a static or flat surface. The experiment engages the viewer as participant to shape or activate typography, by making use of visual perception, line structures and optical illusion. Texts, letterforms and their legibility are no longer defined by outlines, but rather appear through motion or apparent depth. As a result, letterforms seemingly raise above the plane, beyond the two-dimensional structure from which it is constructed. Therefore the typography takes shape, via the viewer’s eye and mind, somewhere on the boundary between reality and appearance. REACTIVE TYPE RELIEFS The Reactive Type Reliefs are analogue works in which the viewer reacts to the image, and the image in turn, reacts to the movement of the viewer. The work resembles a screen on which the moving image may appear to be virtual. In reality, the image makes use of the technology of printing, the viewer’s visual perception and own physical movement. In this way, the viewer translates two-dimensional line structures into the appearance of three-dimensional and transforming typography. The advantage of line structures is its possibility to produce optical effects, such as the moiré effect. Moiré is a physical phenomenon that occur in the superposition of multiple line structures that, in this case, produces a moving image or vivid stereoscopic depth. Moiré is considered an undesirable side effect, in both on-screen and in printed matter, which Dijkstra uses to the sculpting of typography.
