I have been a teacher and a union and peace activist committed to justice, equality, innovation and the power of education. Over my career, I have taught in high schools in Adelaide and in country South Australia. I was among the first cohort of women appointed High School Principals.I was an active member since 1961 of the South Australian Institute of Teachers (SAIT), now the Australian Education Union SA. I have focussed on conditions of service, the status of women teachers and Aboriginal education workers. In 1989 I founded The Graham F Smith Peace Foundation in memory of my husband Graham Smith. In 2017 The Foundation was awarded the Governor's Multicultural Award for support of social justice and social change by fostering projects across the artistic spectrum illuminating topics such as reconciliation and the legacy of the atomic age. I devote most of my time now to working for the Peace Foundation and issues related to human rights, environmental sustainability and social justice.
