About Leonie Gordon

I have a 30+ years of experience in law, the media, coaching/counselling, creativity, anthropology, and international environmental governance. I enjoy bringing this breadth of experience to everything I do.Currently I have two main foci: writing and reporting on global sustainable development governance; and my creative work as an emerging artist. I have 10 years’ experience as a media lawyer and producer, 10 years in anthropological research (including a Masters in Anthropology of Development and Social Transformation) including systems thinking and organisational development approaches, and 9 years working with the Earth Negotiations Bulletin as a team leader/writer/editor reporting on international negotiations on environment and sustainable development, culminating in 2 years as Senior Manager with IISD RS managing a global virtual team of 90 consultants. For 7 years I ran my own consultancy A Curious Life offering 1-1 sessions and workshops. I am a trauma-informed coach and counsellor, and teach meditation and self-inquiry. Cultivating curiosity and presence are at the core of my practice. Currently this has taken a back seat as I focus on developing my work as an abstract intuitive artist but my practice forms the foundation to my creative process.

Trauma-informed Coach and Counsellor Inner Man/Inner Woman work.Meditation & Self Inquiry - Education & GuidanceCreative FlowWith a background in law/media/international environmental policy and a Masters in Anthropology, I now bring my experience to bear on writing, coaching and inspiring people to live a curious and conscious life. Curiosity provides a gateway to a deeper connection with ourselves and through this to the emergence of a natural sense of creativity and fulfilment.I support clients in identifying their underlying conditioning, clearing emotional blocks and barriers, promoting self-healing, unlocking creativity and curiosity and reconnecting with joy. Developing self-awareness is central to this, and I seek to help clients to rediscover and nurture their natural connection to their own truth. People tend to know on some level the answers to questions they are dealing with, I help them to bring those answers to the surface through supporting deep open inquiry. Once we have self awareness we can make choices not just decisions. I love working with people at a deep authentic level to realise what is important to them and help them know that they have the resources to achieve anything they desire. My approach combines understandings of Western Humanistic Psychology and Middle Eastern and Eastern approaches.

Leonie is a trauma-informed coach and counsellor with a background in global environmental governance, law, anthropology and the creative industry. She holds a 10 years’ experience as a media lawyer, a Masters in Anthropology of Development and Social Transformation and 6 years research (University of Kent/DICE) into the UNEP/UNESCO Great Ape Survival Project (a Type II partnership under the MDGs) to study the transformation brought about by the partnership approach introduced into the UN system by Kofi Annan. Her research approach included systems thinking and organisational development approaches to complex public-private partnerships, as well as analysis of the networks and flows of information, science, narratives, interests and funding that impact the emergence of great ape conservation and policy narratives and practice. She spent 9 years working with IISD Reporting Services (the Earth Negotiations Bulletin) as a team leader/writer/editor reporting on international negotiations on environment and sustainable development, culminating in 2 years as Senior Manager with IISD RS managing a global virtual team of 90 consultants. In 2014, Leonie retrained as a practitioner in somatic therapeutic approaches to developing emotional, cognitive and behavioural self-awareness – including somatic inquiry, personal development and creative tools in exploring and developing a deepening of self-awareness and collective awareness. She brings this field of practice into her thinking and writing how we can collectively work in collaborative and transformative ways to become present to new ways to address some of the complex problems facing us today.Leonie worked with the One Ocean Hub as a Knowledge Exchange Fellow. A key aspect of this role was to contribute to the Hub governance, processes and practices by supporting collaborative co-learning. This drew from her engagement in the Presencing Institute (PI) Theory U/u.lab framework methodology.
  • International Institute For Sustainable Development
    Senior Manager, Earth Negotiations Bulletin
International Institute For Sustainable Development Apr 2012 - Jul 2014
I was on the senior management team managing IISD’s reporting services division (www.iisd.ca), also known as the Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB). IISD is Canada’s leading think tank on sustainable development, with offices in Canada, the US and Geneva and consultants based all over the world. Our division, which functioned as a virtual network subsidiary of the institute, was established during the Earth Summit, funded by the UN and governments to provide a neutral, authoritative and up-to-the-minute record of on-going multilateral negotiations on environment and sustainable development. I was overall Senior Manager for Conference Reporting and managed a network of the 90 consultants expert in sustainable development based all over the world who people our reporting teams. We provided a reporting and knowledge broker service to UN agencies and governments who were our clients. Ultimately in our role as a trusted knowledge broker to stakeholders, the institute’s mission was to provide access and transparency to the international negotiations on sustainable development and my role in managing our reporting services was to increase the reach of such transparency. I was responsible for:• coordination and oversight of the strategic and day-to-day management of conference reporting and sales of services, including the management of the sales team and the consultant network,• supervision of the contracting process with donors and clients, staffing at CRS meetings, completion of deliverables• generating sales leads and continue to grow and expand products and services• nurturing the consultant network, training and recruitment
  • International Institute For Sustainable Development
International Environmental Governance Expert, Team Leader, Writer/Editor, Enb
International Institute For Sustainable Development May 2005 - Jul 2014
At this point in my career, having completed my Masters in Anthropology of Development and starting out on my doctoral research, I successfully applied to the Earth Negotiations Bulletin in New York to be a team leader, writer/editor with their reporting services team. This is a highly acclaimed role within the International environmental and sustainable development governance field and I embarked on a fascinating almost ten years as part of this incredible team of writers and editors providing online coverage of negotiations on sustainable development issues including conservation, climate change, habitat, energy, water. The Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) has rare access to observe and provide transparency through their reporting on these negotiations. I worked with ENB for almost ten years and even when I was a Senior Manager I continued to participate in our coverage of climate and biodiversity meetings in particular throughout that time. My particular area of interest and expertise was the Convention on International trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora and the Convention on Migratory Species as well as Climate Change negotiations but I covered a vast array of meetings across the IEG field.
  • International Institute For Sustainable Development
Earth Negotiations Bulletin, Conference Reporting Services Manager
International Institute For Sustainable Development Jan 2009 - Apr 2012
I was a team leader/writer/editor for the Earth Negotiations Bulletin (a non-profit reporting on UN Negotiations on Environment and Sustainable Development). My principal specialism was biodiversity (including CBD, CMS and CITES) but I covered a wide range of meetings including on Energy, Climate Change, Chemicals etc.In 2009, I was taken on as conference reporting services manager alongside my continuing role as team leader, writer/editor. I co-managed ENB’s newly created 'for hire' conference reporting services division. I was responsible for developing a new 'for profit' arm of the non-profit ENB. I developed the 'for hire' side of the conference reporting whereby we were hired by UN and other international and governmental bodies to provide coverage in a similar way to ENB . Ultimately highly successful within the organisation, I developed our video coverage and other innovative services offered to governments and UN bodies, and in that time increased the revenue over profit from approximately US$500,000 to US$1.3 million. I developed a niche offering that were vital to the organisation, in particular in challenging economic times
