Thesis research: the characterization of carbon dioxide on icy moons by analyzing laboratory ice analogs and JWST observations.
Madrid, Gemeente Madrid, Spanje
The main objective is to develop a model to calculate optical constants of pure water ice. To obtain this model, experiments consisting on the deposition of an ice layer at 8 K or higher temperatures are performed. This ice is characterized by infrared spectroscopy in transmittance using the InsterStellar Astrochemistry Chamber (ISAC). This chamber is designed for studying solids (ice mantles, organics and silicates) in interstellar and circumstellar environments. It is used to characterize their physico-chemical properties and monitor their evolution as caused by: vacuum UV irradiation, cosmic ray irradiation and thermal processes. The data necessary for making the model is obtained by measuring the ice thickness using laser interferometry. The molecules desorbing from the ice are detected using a quadrupole mass spectrometer.
