About Simon S.
Beginning in Chemistry as an ACS Scholar at the U of O, I developed an interest in 3D modeling and the visual arts. Working as a Lab Preparator and Lab Demonstrator provided me the opportunity to further explore these subjects by creating educational materials for Chemistry classes and online resources for students. I was then approached to work with the Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry to produce a series of educational videos and interviews with research students and faculty to raise awareness of Nanoscience and recruit students for research opportunities. I also worked alongside researchers to document their work as well as helping to create images and figures for research papers and scientific journals. It was around this time that I worked as a copy editor on "The Social Embeddedness of Industrial Ecology", a text examining the ways in which material and energy flow in regions and product chains, and how they are shaped by the social context in which they occur. My time working in the sciences peaked my interest in digital art and 3D modeling and allowed me to develop a portfolio to be accepted at the School of Architecture and Allied Arts, for Digital Arts. Completing my BFA positioned me at the confluence of art and science; my work exploring nanoscience, projection mapping, 3D printing and modern manufacturing processes. After school I worked with children at the Asperger Support Network, sharing my love of art and science, before segueing into truss design and then later working with a former colleague to machine precision parts in aluminum.
