The challenge involved running from London to Dover (85 miles), swimming the English Channel (21 miles), cycling from France to Norway (2,000 miles), and finally rowing 700 miles to Longyearbyen, the most northerly inhabited town in the world, on the island of Svalbard. It took us 81 days to complete the first human powered journey from London to Svalbard.I created this world-first endurance challenge with a friend and spent 3 years (while working full-time), planning and training for it. We raised £70k to fund the trip through sponsorship and also have raised £86k for The Scout Association. This project involved brainstorming what the challenge would be, laying out the route of the agreed challenge, researching feasibility, creating risk assessments and looking into logistics. We created sponsorship proposals with tiered packages, built a website, and approached corporate companies that we thought would be interested. We successfully secured over £70k.We organised various fundraising events, including a black tie ball complete with dinner, dancing, an auction, raffle and games, which raised £24k. Alongside this we had to train for the challenge. Neither of us were endurance athletes at the beginning but we put the hours in and prepared ourselves for the challenge.
