Established a literacy tutoring and positive mentoring weekly program in 2003 at a nearby juvenile detention center that is currently still in operation over 15 years later. Hundreds of Pepperdine students have volunteered through this service opportunity since 2003 to positively impact kids in their temporary classrooms in order to boost their learning outcomes while being in detention. Pepperdine students mutually benefit by getting to know kids from diverse backgrounds in order to increase their understanding of social justice issues such as recidivism and juvenile detention trajectories. The program was established in partnership with an alumnus teacher, Mr. Ty Kastendiek, at the facility and under the direction of Pepperdine English Professor, Dr. LeeAnn .
