The Lebanese Emigration Research Center (LERC) is an academic research center at Notre Dame University (NDU). Established in April 2003, it is the first center in Lebanon dedicated specifically to the study of migration.The creation of the Center is the direct result of NDU’s awareness of the Lebanese emigrants’ contribution to their ancestral land and to their new home countries. It is also the result of NDU’s awareness of a renewed interest in global identity, ancestral roots and genealogical heritage.As part of its mission to promote original research and intellectual exchange, LERC has created the Lebanese Emigration Archives & Database, which presently holds over 37,000 indexed entries, including personal collections, articles, documents, monographs, films and audio materials. The LERC Library contains many hard copy publications written in more than eight languages, including dissertations, theses and academic books on Lebanese emigration and comparative migration studies. The LERC Museum provides a window into the past and present experience of the diaspora. A curated display of photographs, artwork and ethnographic artifacts lend a human face to the often forgotten story of individuals and families of the diaspora. Both the Archive and the Museum have greatly benefited from the generosity of private donors.Over the years, LERC has closely collaborated with various individuals, foreign dignitaries professors, researchers, and students, as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations, including the Lebanese Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of the Interior, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Relief International, the Consortium for Applied Research on International Migration (CARIM), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the European Union Democracy Observatory (EUDO), the International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion in Europe (IMISCOE), the World Lebanese Cultural Union (WLCU) and the Migration Foundation.
