The Cochlear Implant Service assists children and adults with severely impaired hearing through the surgical placement of a cochlea implant as well as pre and post operative management. Over 3000 patients have received a cochlear implant, also known as the 'Bionic Ear', at the Eye and Ear.Reporting to the Executive Director of Surgical and Inpatient Services, and working closely with the Medical Director - the Business Manager of this most specialised area is responsible and accountable for the planning, implementation and management of the structures and processes required to ensure efficient patient-focus delivery.Key Outcomes:1/ The development and introduction of the Cochlear Care Centre in partnership with Cochlear Limited. The key aim of the service was to transition the ongoing care needs and device maintenance to the community setting, allowing greater access to acute services.To date over 900 patients have had their care transitioned to the CCC.2/ The development and implementation of a pilot satellite service in Geelong, in partnership with Australian Hearing. The aim of this pilot was to develop a model of service delivery that can be used to provide patient focussed care in areas of greatest patient demand.3/ In collaboration with the Evectutive Director Surgical and Inpatient Services, the Director of Medical Services and research partners, implement the research governance framework to guide the oversite of research undertaken in the area of Cochlea Implantation.

As Improvement Manager at Melbourne Health I was involved in leading major organisational change projects within the health service using the Lean Six Sigma improvement methodology. The role worked closely with project leads and key stakeholder across the organisation in defining the key problem area to be addressed, identifying key measurables and undertaking baseline measurements. Data anaysis would then be undertaken to determine root causes and develop planned improvement initatives to address these. These improvements would then be implemented, monitored and evaluated so that strategies could be put in place to successfully sustain the changes initiatives.My role as Improvement Manager also involved delivering a 2 day 'Improvement training' workshops to Melbourne Health Staff across the organisation in order to provide staff with the necessary knowledge and tools to undertake improvement work in their areas using the organisational framework.The key improvement projects that I was involved in were as follows;1/ Orthopaedic Length of Stay for DRG IO8 (Other hip & knee surgery) - focused on reducing the length of stay for this patient cohort (reduced from 8 days to 6 days)2/ Hospital After Hrs - Organisation wide project which focused on improving clinical handover after hrs (Nursing and Medical) and improving paging/communication systems after hrs. One of the project outcomes was the introduced a standardised process for clinical handover using the 'ISBAR' system.3/ Outpatient Pharmacy dispensing time - focused on reducing script dispensing times in the Outpatient Pharmacy from a 43 to 30 min.4/ Length of Stay Tools - Organisation wide project which focused on the development of a discharge risk assesment tool and discharge planning tools. It also focused on reviewing patient transfer processes which introduced tools for patients transferred within and externally to Melbourne Health.
