I was one of the four founders of the UK Green Party in 1972, and its first National Secretary. I drafted the party's first manifesto in 1974. Some years of intense activity followed, fighting two general elections, and setting up a national branch network. The political movement we began is now global.Tony, my late husband, and I were partners in our Coventry solicitors’ practice. After years of politics, we sold the business to became self-sufficient small-holders on Exmoor, where I learned to shear sheep, milk goats, make clotted cream and generally look after our large garden, vineyard and livestock in the driest summer on record and some of the worst winters. We moved on in 1982, after Tony had bought a sailing yacht on impulse, which was not compatible with running a moorland farm.I was involved with the team in the early days of setting up Schumacher College at Dartington in South Devon working to establish a continuing funding scheme. As manager of the South Hams Environment Trust I worked with communities to set up individual initiatives and charitable projects.I was an elected Member of Devon County Council from 1997 - 2001 for a large area of South Dartmoor. I was the Vice-Chair and Chairman of Hennock Parish Council on Dartmoor for 9 years. I have extensive political experience though I have been an Independent for many years. When various family members became frail in advanced age, I spent ten years as a full time carer.I am taking control of my writing career, as an indie publisher, and learning many new skills. I write fiction and non-fiction. My themes are environmental, usually thought-provoking as well as entertaining. I am currently working on green philosophy, linking it with the lessons of COVID-19 to address optimistically the current challenges we all face. I am an experienced speaker on a range of topics.

WriterSelf-Employed Jan 1984 - Oct 2021Devon, England, United KingdomI write fiction and non-fiction. My main area of interest and experience is environmental, as a green campaigner of 50 years standing. I seem to have become more of a green philosopher than a politician.I was one of the four founders of the UK National Green Party (then named PEOPLE) in 1972. I stood for Parliament in both 1974 general elections, and was the first National Secretary. I drafted the first manifesto in 1974. During this time, I was a solicitor, a partner with my husband Tony in our own practice, which provided the base for the party, alongside the business of our co-founders, Michael Benfield and Freda Sanders.I moved with my husband to Exmoor, in Devon, UK, in 1976 to our small-holding where our aim was to become self-sufficient. We largely achieved this for five years, but still bought oranges. When my husband commissioned a yacht, we had to sell up and move to the coast.I was regularly commissioned by the BBC Playdays Magazine for pre-school children in the 1980s to write stories and poems, particularly on challenging topics (death, disability.) I self-published paperback books in 2004. (How to Save the World in 100 Days Without Getting too Tired; How to Save Democracy in 100 Days Without Dying of Boredom.)I am currently editing my books on the founding of green politics and the Climate Change emergency. I am learning the skills of self-publishing to indie-publish a wide range of my writing, novels and non-fiction.I have experience of politics in the greens and Liberal Democrats, though I have been non-party-political for decades. My representative experience has been as an elected member of Devon County Council (1997 - 2001) and Hennock Parish Council (2003 - 20012) including as Vice-Chairman and Chairman.
