My work's main focus is on solving urgent challenges in climate. I have academic degrees through the PhD. in Engineering from MIT and UC Berkeley; years of teaching experience at Stanford University; industrial experience from Hewlett-Packard Labs where I worked on MEMS and Microfluidics. I've founded and run two successful consulting companies, MEMS Insight and SmallTech Consulting. Last year I founded a nonprofit Bright Ice Initiative to address climate change. (Previously I started and ran the non-profit, Ice911 Research/Arctic Ice Project for 16 years, which I left in early 2022 to start Bright Ice Initiative). I have taught a seminar class on Engineering and Climate Change at Stanford University for over a decade. Many students have said it was one of the most impactful classes they'd had.I'm also an inventor with over 60 patents, and I've authored/presented numerous peer-reviewed papers and technical conference talks at the American Geophysical Union and the like. The class creates a community of guest lecturers, students, and auditors, all focused on learning about climate change, its impacts, and approaches from around the world to help address this existential crisis in ecologically respectful and effective ways. Student evaluations say they are surprised that a 1-unit seminar class could be so impactful, and some note it is the best class they have taken at Stanford. The class gives the students a basic understanding of some key climate forcers and feedback loops, and promotes an active approach of seeking to explore and develop effective solutions, through innovation and collaboration. Founder (2008), Ceo (2008-2018), Chief Technology Officer (2008-Feb.2022)Ice911 Research (Later Renamed Aip) Oct 2008 - Feb 2022I became concerned with climate change in 2006 and took a strategic approach to invent and develop a technology to preserve and restore polar ice. I began by testing and refining the approach on a very small scale, always with local permissions. In 2008 I incorporated Ice911 Research, a nonprofit focused on restoring Arctic ice, to develop an engineering approach to slow ice melt, one of the far-reaching effects and drivers of global warming. The work included a rigorous evaluation of the effectiveness and safety of approaches to preserve and rebuild ice using an ecologically respectful material in key selected areas. The only time the approach was tested on sea water or sea ice was in a contained, above-ground pool. It has never been tested on open ocean water or ice.Over the years I built a team and outside expert collaborations, to conduct lab testing, small-scale field tests with automated instrumented monitoring, climate modeling, and modeling of deployment techniques. The evaluations indicate that the approach has the potential to slow climate instabilities, to give the world a few more years of breathing room to complete the urgent transition to sustainable energy and fuels.
