Stem cells bring a new hope for cell-based replacement therapy. In our lab, we use human embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) to differentiate RGCs. We are currently aiming to understand when and how retinal progenitor cells gain their retinal ganglion cell (RGC) fate by looking at the various developmental stages of retinal organoids. We have observed that RGCs tend to reach apoptosis around the 5 month mark after differentiation. We want to know whether there is a problem with the differentiation process or if the apoptosis is uncontrolled in the development of the organoid. My role in lab has been to analyze the immunofluorescent stained images using ImageJ and CellProfiler. From the analysis we have conducted, we have observed that RGC development begins to slow down after Day 71, but it is evident that RGCs are generated throughout the different time points (Day 33 - Day 125). When comparing our findings to a study done on the human fetal retina (Xu C, et al. Stem Cell Int. 2019), we can observe that the generation period of retinal ganglion cells in the organoid is very similar to that in the real fetal retina. As a result, we are currently trying to move forward with finding the probable cause of the uncontrolled apoptosis of the RGCs in the organoids.

- Responsible for establishing Matriculate at Stanford, acting as an ambassador between peers and the Advising Fellowship- Serve as one-on-one partners and guides for Matriculate’s High School Fellows (HSFs) across thecountry applying to college- Aid High School Fellows in researching and identifying colleges that are a good fit; completing college essays, resumes, recommendations and application forms; applying for financial aid and comparing packages; and preparing academically, socially, and emotionally to succeed in college- Conduct weekly outreach via text, call, email, shared documents, video call, etc. with each HSF (total of four students) - Report interactions with HSFs through session summaries and monthly reports

- Responsible for recruiting new Spanish interpreters, coordinating interpreting services and resources at Arbor Free Clinic, and ensuring that clinic materials are translated in a timely manner- Examine interpreters for medical and conversational Spanish fluency- Train interpreters on interpreting etiquette and introduce them to clinic procedures- Assist in assessment and quality control of interpreter services at clinic- Facilitate the MED 181 interpreter portion of the CFC training course - Assist in translating voicemails and calling patients- Schedule and coordinate interpreters on a quarterly basis
