The AirPort base station was named #34 top tech project of all time by PC World Magazine - I was technical lead. Before AirPort, 802.11 wireless was configured by entering the name of the network you wanted to join. I came up with the idea of using the Diagnostic Scan which had a list of networks the device could see, and displaying that in a list for the user to choose from. (Thus we had easy networking)Over thirty years of creating, developing and leading software engineering projects. Visible projects: AirPort, iBook, the Newton printed handwriting recognizer, Spreadsheet engine for Ashton Tate, distributed multi-processor OS for Motorola, a flood management telemetry system for the TVA, and a fail-safe system for Boeing Energy Systems. My projects have been reviewed by Time Magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal. Once asked to what does he do? Are you an Architect, Coder, Software Engineer? The Reply "I make shit happen", I still do.One of the differences between someone new and someone senior is the ability to know how long something takes to happen. I can usually do that, assuming the specifications don't change.I'm always looking for projects that interest and challenge me. CtoSextant Technology Jul 2000 - Sep 2002Sextant's first product was MyCarMyWay.com a drop in Automotive portal, the only partner was ClassMates.com. It had extensive customization capability for look and feel. The main feature was to help the user locate a used car by searching 10 sites and aggregating the results. This was done live using screen scrapping techniques. We would then facilitate the users sending a lead to the appropriate party. The Used Vehicle Locator product developed with for our partner BlackBook was used by Used Car Sales Managers to help them find vehicles from to stock their lots. It was a bit more database intensive. • Designed the application, implemented the prototype. • Recruited and managed a team of 8, including 4 programmers. • Created automotive new car configuration tool using WebObjects 5 (Java) and JavaScript, database design, tracking down hard to find Bugs, vendor bugs, and made the code more robust overall. Installed the Xp methodology. My role was as a mentor / coach. I took on all deployment related activities. Configuration: 2 rented racks at AboveNet, with a 100base-T coming in to a 3Com 12 port gigaswitch. 7 Mac 800/DP’s. An Apache server that fronted our 3 app servers. Each talked with our 2 db servers running FrontBase in a cluster configuration. We had a hot standby system configured to take over for the web server or the App Servers in case of a failure, but it could replace any other function.

Apple Airport Base Station (1999)Apple wasn't the first company to introduce Wi-Fi, but in 1999 its flying saucer Base Station became a visible (and stylish) emblem for the joys of wireless connectivity. Apple was a forerunner when it came to incorporating 802.11b into laptops, and it championed the technology before other vendors did. Nowadays, Apple's Airport Extreme Base Station is a direct descendant of the earlier technology. But even though the company is a relatively minor player in networking hardware, the original Base Station had a powerful influence in the early days of Wi-Fi and helped kick-start the migration to the wireless world as we know it today.Hired to help redirect Apple's Newton technology to the Macintosh, I was the software technical lead of the initial engineering design of the iBook. Software technical lead on AirPort, Apple's wireless networking product. (IEEE 802.11b based) Duties: developing the requirements, defining the User Experience, writing the engineering specification, software development budget, recruiting team members, negotiating contracts, writing the drivers for the Macintosh, hardware bring up, managing the vendor “Lucent's WCND” in the Netherlands, and their vendor KarlNet. He also oversaw the AirPort software base station, implemented the MacOS driver, and hired and managed the vendor, Sustworks. Additionally I was part of the team championing the Core99 chipset, North bridge / South Bridge chips, and a new keyboard controller. I also helped in the redesign of power management throughout the entire product line.Regularly briefed Sr. Management, including Jon Rubinstein (Sr. VP - Hardware) and Steve Jobs. -
Sr. EngineerAngeltech 1992 - 2000Oracle-Designed and implemented the database back end for a Jet Engine repair system deployed at GE. C, Object Store, Oracle.Apple Advance Technology Group: Ported and productized Apple's printed handwriting recognizer to the Newton. The New York Times gave a positive review. At the time, this was the largest deployment of Neural Networking technology. Rewrote the Neural Net kernel in ARM assembler, including a method to maximize cache coherency. Converted the entire product from floating point to integer arithmetic, including various forms of fixed point and offset base arithmetic. Localized German and French versions. Designed and implemented handwriting sample data capture. Proposed several enhancements to the recognizer.
