Grant code (CINECA):RBFR08M3P4.The goal of the project is studying and theoretically modeling the laser emission in a disordered material. Here, a shaken granular medium in its different regimes is adopted as a prototypical system. The project is highly interdisciplinary and commits different aspects of the science ofcomplex systems, namely, spin glass theory and granular physics, together with the most advanced results and techniques of photonics.Experiments are carried out by using high power laser sources pumping on active powders displaying various granular phases, from slow quasi-static to rapid and turbulent-like gaseous regimes; in addition femtosecond, pulses will be used to perturb the granular state and realize out-of-equilibrium fluctuation-response experiments.A spin-glass-like theory is developed to describe the disordered interaction of electromagnetic modes. Non-equilibrium statistical mechanics will be applied to granular fluids to provide a general description of the granular phase diagram.Experimental results will also be supported by massively parallel computational results. Our aim is providing a comprehensive assessment of the emission from "complex black body", i.e. cavities involving modes coupled by quenched random coefficients, by also reporting the first direct demonstration of a transition to a replica symmetry breaking phase and the first laser emission from granulars under shaking. The project will eventually be extremely relevant in the field of nano-structured photonic devices as it is aimed to unveil from first principles the role of disorder inultra-fast laser emission.
