Climate change impacts people and people impact on climate change. As a Chemical Engineer who has worked in several different heavy industries,I realise just how much our industries can impact on our surrounding natural resources. While I’m not a person who is adverse to heavy industry, I still believe there is a responsibility for all of us to uphold and protect our environment for all living things on our beautiful planet to survive. I propose to bring further climate change understanding to others, through real experiences, proof and research. To collaboratively inspire others to bring to the table their knowledge, skills and ideas for finding solutions to a sustainable future. The homeward bound project specifically focuses on women to empower other female Scientists in leadership. The training that we as women in Science will receive is part of an expedition to Antarctica where I will be one of the few Engineers. Homeward Bound has selected 78 remarkable female leaders in science from around the world, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, UK, US, Norway, New Zealand and South Africa, who are working together on a range of projects throughout 2016, culminating in a 20 day voyage to Antarctica in Dec 2016. Because Antarctica is one of the fastest changing regions on our planet, it provides the ideal location to demonstrate the advancement of climate science. Each participant is required to raise the funds necessary to cover the leadership and science program. This is approximately $21,000 USD ($27,000 AUD). Water Treatment Specialist in Closed Loop Systems, Boilers, Waste Water and Cooling Towers.• Self-manage servicing and sales of NSW customer base.• Site water sampling and measurements in accordance to Quality systems for water chemical balances, management and reporting.• Sample preparation for dispatch to laboratories.• Operate, manage, procure, deploy, calibrate and maintain field instruments and test kits.• Data collation, preparation and analysis for routine reporting through communication, correspondence and presentations.• Adhere to quality control guidelines, procedures and standards for risk assessments, sampling, measuring, decontamination and testing.• Troubleshoot customer sites, instrumentation and systems against KPI’s and provide technical advice for improvements.

Pilbara Emulsion Manufacturing Plant Design (2010 to 2012):-• Prepare plant design concept via P&IDs, PFDs, BOD, Interlocks and detailed control logic and philosophy in preparation for Review, Hazard Studies, CHAZOPs and LOPA Studies.• Detailed design on pipe sizing, pumps, major plant items including, boiler sizing, reaction vessels, water system and chemical addition systems for the entire process. Includes modelling endothermic reactions for dissolving Ammonium Nitrate with steam in order to size all components relating to the steam system and plant capability. • Communicate and liaise with mechanical and electrical engineers to ensure FEED understood and carried through.• Direct and assist graduate process engineer in design calculations.• Prepare and revise tenders and technical documentation for procurement.• Plant commissioning including relevant documentation and data collection.Outcomes:-• Actual dissolving time superior to modelled outcomes.• Plant handed over with ability for increased capacities.Other Projects:-• Liddell Dissolve Facility, Kalgoorlie Cooling Circuit Upgrade, Boddington Emulsion Plant, Christmas Creek Bulk Depot, Pilbara Waste Oil Treatment.• Commissioned Liddell Dissolve Facility with projected outcomes and superior dissolving time.

Pilot Plant Troubleshooting:- • Establish a database for plant sampling, monitoring, reporting, mass balances and unit operation performance.• Provide solutions for filtration, settling, and flocculation, desliming using cyclones, milling and sizing to optimise for lower ash yield in coal during digestion. • Train operators in new sampling system and present findings for process improvements. Explanation of plant data reporting sheets from database.• Provide further training to operations staff in the technical importance and understanding of the process for improved data collection.Laboratory Director:- • Establish laboratory equipment requirements and obtain training of particle sizing equipment, titrations and kiln drying coal for ash analysis.• Provide research directions, experimental designs in solving issues associated with caustic/acid recovery and the kinetics of the streams, coal water washing, and pipe, digester and heat exchanger scaling, wastewater recycling, water treatment and water ingress management. • Provide training guidelines for sample collection, monitoring and interpretation.Process Improvements:- • Provide design concepts, calculations and installation recommendations for process improvements in caustic and acid recovery, coal preparation, water recycling/cleaning and waste management. Commission the recommended systems established. • Investigate the use of lime for regeneration of caustic, trails to remove use of lime for process response.• Conduct trials on Jarasiting acid wash circuit to recover clean water for acid washing.• Investigate solutions for descaling the digester for improved heat transfer.

Process improvement project at Onesteel, Newcastle:-• Model process flows through pump and system curve calculations and mass balances for contaminant removal efficiencies of the Rod and Bar Mill Water Treatment plants through process investigations. Provide solutions to problems associated with unit operations on the plant.P&ID updating at Onesteel, Mt Druit:- • Provide draftsmen with updated sketches of the water treatment plant pipes and control systems.Working at Heights Project at Onesteel, Newcastle:-• Provide solutions to eliminate operators climbing heights above 2 m in the Bar Mill warehouse. Design for Pneumatic Conveying at Onesteel, Mt Druit:-• Provide design specifications for pipe sizes on a Pneumatic Conveying system for existing equipment.Process Improvements at UCC Energy, Cessnock:-• Investigate issues associated with filtration problems in the coal preparation area and assist in trouble shooting plant operational issues.• Provide recommendations for establishing and analysing plant issues for laboratory associated tests and test equipment.

Steel River Estate

Process improvement projects:- • Research leach process dust suppression and water losses in product finishing. Sulphide recirculation and product development commissioning trials.• Monitor electrolytic cell cathodes and anodes for improvements and issues associated with product problems.• Electrolytic cell house trials, preparing and introducing catalytic slurry to electrolyte feed boxes to form improved product. Monitoring outcomes and data.Pilot plant operations:- • Developed grinding, milling and product finishing techniques for R&D products.Other Process Duties:- • Process monitoring, sampling and troubleshooting. Agitator upgrades, pump resizing and sourcing flocculants for process water treatment. Product development with the projects team.
